The British Council and the Ministry of Education in Thailand are once again running the ‘Thailand English Teaching Programme’ in 2014 to help improve the English language skills of children in Thai schools and develop cultural linksbetween Thailand and the UK.

This is a great opportunity for students and recent graduates from participating Universities in the UK to come to Thailand for placements in schools and colleges in order to gain valuable work and life experience and learn about the unique culture of Thailand.

The Thailand English Teaching (TET) Programme runs throughout the summer and places students on assignments as ‘English Teaching Assistants’ or ‘ETAs’ all around the country.

More details about the programme

  • The TET school placements are for 9 weeks from 27th June to 29th August2014
  • The 9 weeks of teaching will includetwo long weekend break for you to travel within Thailand and explore its unique culture and natural beauty
  • For the 2014 programme, we will recruit 300 English Teaching Assistants from participating Universities in the UK.
  • Placementswill be located in schools and colleges all over Thailand
  • Some schools are willing to place more than one ETA and wherever possible, there will be more than one ETA based in each location.
  • In some cases, an ETA will be placedalone.Where this is the case, you will be notified before you accept a place onthe programme
  • Applicantswill be able to state preferences on their willingness to be placed alone when completing the application form.
  • A Thai mentor teacher will be allocated in each participating school to support you during your stay
  • The package for ETAs includes:
  • an overallstipend of 20,000 Thai Baht, payable in two instalments of 10,000 Baht, at the end of July and August 2014;
  • free accommodation at your school placement;lunch on working days;
  • accommodation at orientation and departure,
  • in-country travel between Bangkok and your placement at the start and end of the programme; UK-based briefing and English Language teaching induction training programme;
  • As an English Language Assistant on the TET programme, you will be contracted directly by your host school. However, professional and pastoral support will be provided bythe Ministry of Education/British Council TET project teamwhile you are in Thailand.

Important note on costs to be covered by ETAs: Participants will need to cover costs for UK-Thailand-UK flight, Thai visa,Disclosure and Barring Service [DBS] criminal record check*, insurance, vaccinations and the cost of travelling to a UK based pre-departure briefing and introductory English Language training.

Role of English Teaching Assistants

As an ETA, you will work with Thai teachers of English to:

  • assist in the development of conversational English in the classroom
  • contribute to extra-curricular programmes and school, college and community life
  • enhance Thai students’ understanding of UK culture
  • help increase student interest and motivation in studying English in Thai classrooms
  • provide support to the Thai teachers of English to help develop their English language skills

As an English Language Assistant in Thailand, you will need to be flexible and able to adapt to a different culture and tradition quickly. You are not required to have any teaching qualifications, but youmust have a keen interest in language and excellent English language communication skills. The briefing information in the UK and Thailand will provide some guidelines on starting out in the English classroom. However if the programme is oversubscribed, we will prioritise those candidates who are studying to be teachers or have existing teaching qualifications and experience.

Eligibility

If you would like to take up the opportunity to work as an English teaching assistant in Thailand, you are eligible to apply if you meet all of these criteria:

You hold a UK or EU passport

You are 18 or over

You are currently a student in higher education in the UKor graduated in 2013

Your level of English is at native speaker competence, and you have excellent communication skills in English

You have a keen interest in gaining work experience in Thailand as an English language teaching assistant

You are able to attend a pre-departure briefing and training day in the UK in April 2014

You are ableto arrive in Thailand on or before 26th June and are available for the full period of this assignment from 27th June to 29th August 2014

You can pay for your own flight, visa, insurance, vaccinations and DBS check*

You are in good health and have no medical condition that would affect you travelling to Thailand or carrying out this role

You comply with medical requirements prior to travelling, e.g. have the recommended vaccinations
