Table S1. Examples of unresponsiveness reports and content analysis. In the left hand column, a summary of an interview transcript is presented, with those parts of the transcript coded as Dreaming marked with italics, those parts coded as Memory incorporation with underlining, and those as Awareness with both italics and underlining. The content codings for each type of experience are listed in columns to the right.

Dexmedetomidine, ROR1
Reported two dreams where first “I was a child again, around six or seven years old, and I was practicing artistic gymnastics at school with other kids. I jumped up to reach the bar and started spinning around and around, gradually slowing down and then stopped. Then I went to lie on the floor, and felt as if my arms dropped almost through the floor. I was training my Labrador Retriever who managed the commands well.” Reported also that “ I heard movement around me, chairs being moved, and somebody touching the bed and my back. Possibly I heard sentences, but I cannot recall any specific content.” / Dreaming
Memory incorporation / Visual, auditory, kinesthesia, positive emotion
Auditory, touch / Dynamic

Reported that “I heard sentence stimuli during unresponsiveness and I thought I had woken up in the middle of anesthesia. I think I answered to the stimuli by pressing the handles three times.” (The three handle presses and arousal were recorded in the CRF and later confirmed from EEG recordings.) / Awareness / Auditory / Static
