PRAYAS

AMAGARH INCLUSIVE SCHOOL

REPORT: April to June 2015

Every citizen should be entitled to the rights provided by the constitution of this nation upon birth. Those rights include health, nutrition, education and equality of opportunity to lead a life with dignity. Society has however failed to provide the conditions necessary for these rights to be realized. Today these rights and dignity have to be fought for.

Thus, Ms. Jatinder Arora founded Prayas based on the recognition that something must be done. ‘Prayas’ means an effort. Prayas started its fight for human dignity to combat the desolate conditions and social stigma disabled and underprivileged children are all too often subjected to. With our efforts, children from the marginalized section of society have proved themselves competent enough to be a part of society. Prayas enable even the most marginalized child to create his own independent identity, showcase his talents and to be an inspiration to many. Prayas is dedicated to this fight for human dignity and our efforts are being rewarded by the social recognition that children are capable of growth, development and achieving their full potential, no matter what their physical, mental or social challenges are.

Stories of Change

Sachin

Sachin is a slow learner student, who joined Prayas Amagarh School in 2009 at the age of six. Sachin had never been to school before. He was disinterested in everything. He hardly spoke and had great difficulty in reading and writing. He used to be very shabbily dressed.

Sachin was assessed by our special educator and psychologist and a well-designed individualized education program was drawn up for him. He was made to sit in the class among some intelligent children. This helped him in his learning process. After school hours, he was given an extra half an hour of special help and also assisted with his home work assignments. Initially he used to absent himself from school very frequently. His parents were contacted and they were advised to see that he attended school regularly. His sister and parents were very cooperative in this regard.

He gradually started responding and picking up lessons, taught in class. At present Sachin in Class III. Although he is very slow in learning, but still he is able to read his text books, do sums and knows multiplication tables. He has developed a keen interest in studies along with special love with poem recitation and dancing as well. The most attractive feature of Sachin’s personality is that he always wears a cute smile on his face and tries to make others laugh with his activities. His elder sister is also studying in Rajapark School after completing class 5th From Prayas Amagarh School. Teachers, time to time provide him activities of his interest to keep him study well.

Nasreen-

Ten year old Nasreen is a child with multiple disabilities. When she joined Amagarh School, she was not able to perform activities of her daily living on her own. She used to sit in a corner with dull looks. Before taking admission in Prayas, she had never been to any school. At Prayas Amagarh School, Special educator and supervisor along with physiotherapist, made a comprehensive plan for Nasreen and started working on it. In a short period of time there is good and visible development in her. Now, she can walk independently. She not only sits in the class, but also participates in activities with other classmates and teachers. She is also doing good in academic field and her level of understanding is increasing. After recommendation of her special educator she is being shifted in class Nursery with other regular students. We hope that mainstreaming Nasreen in to inclusive class will help her bring more development and confidence.

Parents of Nasreen were shocked when we told them about promoting Nasreen in Class nursery at the same time they were extremely happy and grateful to her teachers for their efforts.

Capacity building

Our project focuses on working to attain the long term goal of ensuring inclusive education for the children through a complete change in the way of thinking of people in the slums. Therefore, we focus on capacity building of all the stakeholders involved in the project. The details given below present a summary of Prayas’ approach for building capacities under this project.

1.  Community development, the process of equipping people with the understanding, awareness and their access to policies run by the government, knowledge and vocational training that enables them to perform effectively.

2.  Amagarh School development, the elaboration of inclusive education structures, processes and procedures, not only within School but also the management of relationships with parents and community

3.  Children development, making physical and mental changes to enable them, at all levels and in all sectors and to enhance their capacities. The inclusive education model of Prayas bridges the gap in education and equality as now children behave equally with special and normal students.

4.  Teachers’ development to equip them with new tool in the field of inclusion and other technologies. During this reporting period classes for teachers were organised to polish their skills in preparing effective lesson plan and its execution.
