Systems and Database Developer

Post Ref: 5730, 37 hours per week, Fixed Term for 18 Months, £29,427 - £30,300 per annum

We are looking for a Systems and Database Developer who is passionate about technology and is results orientated. Your focus will be to develop and support College software systems and provide reports to fulfil our strategic aims.

With a logical and highly organised approach you will work with a wide variety of systems ranging from large databases to bespoke applications. Experience of SQL Server and developing complex reports in SSRS are essential.

Educated to degree level in an IT related discipline you will have with experience of developing and maintaining software systems used by many thousands of users.

Responsible to:IT Manager

OVERALL PURPOSE:

To develop and support College software systems and reports in accordance with the strategic direction of the organisation.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES:

  1. To support on-going development and enhancement of College software systems.
  2. To ensure accurate documentation is produced and maintained.
  3. To produce and maintain reports based on accurate College data.
  4. To identify and respond to the needs of internal and external users, providing timely responses as appropriate.
  5. To be responsive to the needs of the department and College.

MAIN DUTIES:

1.1 To maintain and enhance existing College software systems, reports and websites.

1.2 To ensure systems are upgraded where appropriate.

1.3To undertake, where appropriate, development of systems using applicable development techniques.

1.4 To ensure the most appropriate development tools and languages are used in the production of systems and reports.

1.5 To ensure all supported systems/reports are extensively tested and comply with required internal/external standards.

1.6 To ensure College operations are not unduly disrupted for considerable periods of time.

2.1 To produce detailed documentation for all supported systems, reports and processes.

3.1 To produce appropriate reports for use at all levels of the College and external stakeholders.

3.2 To make corrections to data contained within systems as directed.

4.1 To work closely with relevant stakeholders to provide a proactive, responsive service where user requirements are fully met.

4.2To set, review and maintain appropriate timescales and priorities.

4.3To train and provide technical support to staff in the use of any supported systems/reports.

5.1To undertake such other duties as may be reasonably required

5.2To take appropriate responsibility for the safeguarding and promotion for the welfare of children and/or vulnerable adults.

5.3To actively promote Equality and Diversity in line with the College’s policy.

5.3 To undertake invigilation duties as and when required.

5.4To work on either a temporary or permanent basis at any of the College sites.

Person Specification

Post Title: Systems & Database Developer (Post Ref: 5730)

CRITERIA / ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENT / DESIRABLE REQUIREMENT
Skills/Knowledge/Aptitude
Good communication skills both written and oral.
Thorough knowledge of SQL (T-SQL) and Microsoft SQL Server.
Thorough knowledge of the implementation and development of SharePoint.
Familiarity with software development software using .NET Framework.
Familiarity with the Systems Development Lifecycle. / 

Qualifications and Training
First Degree in Computing (or equivalent) or 3 years relevant experience.
Excellent numeracy, literacy and communication skills to undertake tasks involved. / 

Experience
Experience of applying SQL and database concepts to large, disparate and complex relational databases.
Experience of designing concise, impactful and accurate reports using Reporting Services (SSRS).
Experience of developing SharePoint systems.
Experience of applying the structured methodical approaches to projects.
Experience of working with stakeholders to specify requirements.
Experience of producing thorough technical documentation.
Experience of MIS Systems in Further Education.
Experience of SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS).
Experience of working in large public sector organisations. / . 
