Symposium Proposal
Purpose:
The completion of the ASTM Symposium Proposal is intended to be used by the sponsoring technical committees and the ASTM staff to enhance the following: (1) identify strong industry need areas, and (2) better evaluate market potential for both the symposium event and the resulting publication.
Procedure:
Before symposium planning begins, the symposium chairman (or subcommittee representative) must complete the Proposal and submit it to the sponsoring technical committee’s executive subcommittee for approval. The ASTM staff manager provides the completed Proposal to the ASTM Symposia Manager, who contacts the symposium chair for the initial stages of symposium planning. For more information on Symposia and Workshops, access the ASTM website at

7. General Objectives -
Ultimately we would like to achieve a matrix of information, based on peer-reviewed papers with published test data, that will allow the user to compare and select installation methods and materials for performance under different conditions; this data will be useful to the architect, specifier, installer, and building owner. We encourage testing and publication of data on alternate installation methods and new materials.
8. Specific Objectives -What specific objectives will the symposium participants realize by attending this symposium? Some examples are: how and where a specific standard has been applied; how to promote the unique uses of a standard; current research in a specific area; current market trends related to standards issues; or current opportunities for developing standards.
To gather and publish testing results on materials and whole-wall testing - from manufacturers and users of all membranes, flashings, sealants, windows, wall systems, envelopes. This symposium is a follow-up on STP 1484 based on the symposium conducted in April 2004 in Salt Lake City – please see attached.

Building membrane, flashing, sealant, window and sundry item manufacturers, architects, engineers, developers, building code officials, builders, contractors, homeowners, government agencies.
10. Market Demand - Are there other organizations offering conferences or publications on this topic? NO.
(If yes, what share of the potential audience do you believe ASTM would attract?) What topics have successfully attracted interest in the symposium event and/or the publication?
See STP 1484.
11. Program/Table of Contents - List the topics, clearly defining the content of the symposium in accordance with the scope of the symposium.
See attached STP 1484 for examples.
12. Publication of Peer-Reviewed Papers - The peer-reviewed papers will be published in ASTM's new online journal, the Journal of ASTM International (JAI). The Symposium Chairman will receive recognition as a Guest Editor for all JAI issues in which the papers are published. The Symposium Chairman (JAI Guest Editor) is expected to encourage and remind the presenters/authors to submit their papers and assist the JAI Associate Editor in the peer review process of those papers for the journal. ASTM also issues a collection of reprinted papers (after publication in JAI) as a Special Technical Publication (STP). (A minimum of ten papers is required for an STP.)
