Learning Outcomes:

Graduate students with a concentration in design will demonstrate professional expertise in their chosen field.

Objectives

£ Provide students with a comprehensive understanding role of the costume designer and how the principles and elements of design are used to visually support the ideas and values expressed in dramatic literature

£ Develop students’ skills in research and script analysis specifically related to costume design,

£ Develop students’ skills in costume rendering in various mediums

£ Provide students with comprehensive understanding of the organizational paperwork and duties required of a costume designer in the course of a production

£ Enhance students’ ability to analyze and assess the work of other professional designers with a focus on assimilating what they observe into their own work

■ Methods

Students will attend a series of workshops focused on script and character analysis and the use of the principle and elements of design in clothing and will then be guided through a series of exercises in drawing and illustration techniques for figure and costume rendering including drawing pencil, color pencil, watercolor markers, and graphics pad and pen used with computer rendering software. Assignments will consist of design projects that require students to design, render, and provide all necessary paperwork and documentation of all costumes for three dramatic texts. In order to prevent unduly overburdening students with theoretical projects, wherever possible, assigned texts are determined by actual production assignments for each student during the semester and/or further exploration of texts previously worked on in prior coursework of another design discipline. Students will also be required to attend a number of professional productions and attend talkbacks or discussions after each performance.

■ Texts

All required texts are listed in the Assignments handout.

■ Assignments

Details of all assignments are provided the “Assignments” handout.

I am eager to make this class a successful learning environment. As a parent who has dealt with a lack of understanding in the area of learning disabilities when my own child was in college, I am keenly aware of how even a small disability might require coursework accommodations. Whenever possible, and in accordance with 504/ADA guidelines, I will attempt to provide reasonable academic accommodations to students who request and require them. Please contact the Center for Students with Disabilities for more assistance. Please feel free to make an appointment with me to discuss any concerns you might have in this area as early as possible in the semester.
