Syllabus for traditional (classroom) version of the course:

FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT BU 3210 Fall 2016

Professor: Dr. Edward Harding (Ned)

Objectives: This course is designed to introduce the vocabulary and techniques used in three major areas of finance: corporate financial management, the markets for stocks and bonds, and classic financial models.

Assumptions: The course content assumes that students, have mastered basic mathematical and accounting concepts and that they will eventually be making financial decisions regarding corporate management, investment portfolios, and personal finances. Student success in this course is primarily a function of their ability to stay focused in a lecture environment, and to apply quantitative reasoning to written problems.

Expectations: Each student is expected to read the text that accompanies this course, to attend classes regularly, and to bring (and use) a calculator in class.

Grades: Course grades are based on a weighted average of class participation (5%), three timed quizzes (15% ea), a project (15%), and the final exam (35%). Quizzes and exams are subject to “scaling”. Maximum grades on project = 4.0 = A= 95.

Reference Material: 1) Sketches in Finance is available at the PSU Bookstore. Each student is required to have their own edition of the text as it is needed to complete the quizzes and exercises of the course. 2) The course webpage is called “contents” and is available via Moodle and also at:

Attendance Policy:

Regular attendance at scheduled class meetings is considered to be an integral component of taking, participating and successfully completing this course.

1. Daily student attendance is recorded by the instructor. It is recommended that students keep their own records of attendance.

2. Students are NOT required to inform the instructor of upcoming absences.

3. ALL absences are considered “excused” absences.

4. Students do NOT need to provide documentation for any absences.

5. A student’s attendance performance will be considered in the determination of his/her subjective participation evaluation.

Academic Integrity: This course adheres to PSU’s academic integrity standards. When a student submits a piece of work with his or her name attached, it is assumed that the work was created by that same student. If it appears that the work is a copy of someone else’s work, then it will be assumed that academic integrity standards have been violated and the work will be evaluated accordingly. Likewise, a student who allows his or her original work to be copied will be assumed to be an accomplice in a violation of academic integrity.

Catalog Description: Financial analysis, planning and control techniques for large and small businesses. Includes present value concept, ratio analyses, short-term, intermediate and long-term financing approaches. Falls and Springs. Prerequisite(s): (BU 1150 or BU 1152), (BU 2260 or BU 2262), and (BU 2240 or MA 2300).
