2. Goals and Objectives:

MA509 has as one objective the clarification of the various algebraic structures which occur in algebra courses taught in the high school curriculum . This is accomplished, in part, by introducing the student to concepts in abstract algebra and showing how the various number systems encountered in high school algebra are characterized in abstract terms. Another objective of the course is a thorough study of polynomials over rings and fields with the intent of showing how modern ideas from abstract algebra deal with problems posed in older traditional approaches to polynomials in the theory of equations.

6. Tentative schedule of homework due dates, quizzes and tests:

There will be three tests during the semester and a final exam. They will be announced one week prior to the date of the test and will occur roughly at the times on the day by day schedule given to you in class.

Homework will be done in groups and is due on Tuesday of each

week unless designated otherwise.

The final is from 1:00-4:00 Thursday, December 10

Late homework assignments will rarely be graded.
