SYLLABUS - 11th GRADE ENGLISH - HOGUE - 2016-2017

GOAL AND EXPECTATIONS: This course is a study of Modern and Contemporary American literature and traditional grammar. You will also have the opportunity to improve your ability to communicate your thoughts in organized, coherent forms as you write and research. This course fulfills the requirement of one unit of eleventh grade English for the standard diploma. In order to have a complete understanding of all topics covered, it will be necessary to carefully read and complete all assignments and take part in class discussions. The readings, lectures, activities, assignments, and discussions are all used to analyze each concept presented in the study. Tests will cover all areas of inquiry.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: An ability to (at an 11th grade level):

1. Read and comprehend text and supplemental readings

2. Communicate by using standard grammar, sentence, and paragraph structure

3. Understand higher order thinking questions on exams

4. Participate in class discussions and take accurate and useful class notes

5. Work effectively and productively in groups

TEXTS: Elements of Literature, Fifth Course; Literature, Fifth Course; Elements of Language, Fifth Course, and selected readings. (All requests for special accommodations for this course are welcomed from students and parents.)

CLASS RULES: Rules and policies as stated in the Tuscaloosa County Schools Student Code of Conduct will be enforced.

1. Bring books (if assigned), workbooks, notebooks, and pen/pencils to class every day.

2. Do not adjust the thermostat, blinds, or computer without permission. Do not sit at my desk or podium, write on the board, or get

anything from my desk or podium without permission.

3. Passes will only be issued for emergencies.

4. No spiral paper will be accepted. Include your name, date, and period on all assignments. Write neatly in blue or black ink or in

pencil on assignments.

5. Do not eat in class. Do not bring opened drinks into the classroom. Bottled drinks are fine.

6. Keep the room clean. Do not put paper or trash on the floor. Do not write on the desks or move them.

7. If a student is caught cheating in any form, he/she will receive a zero and could be sent to the office as a disciplinary referral. This

means that the student would not be eligible for exemption for semester exams.

8. Be respectful towards me and others (including language).

9. Sleeping in class may result in a zero for missed grades.

10. All typed assignments should be completed before class. You may not print papers on my computer. Deadlines are strictly

enforced. You must have access to a computer and printer for this course.

11. Late work is not accepted. All assignments must be turned in on time.

12. Cell phones should be put out of sight during class unless you are given permission use them.

13. Stay in your desk until the bell rings.

CLASS POLICIES AND INFORMATION:

1. NOTEBOOK - You need a three-ring binder which includes four index dividers labeled as follows in this order:

SPELLING/VOCABULARY, GRAMMAR/WRITING, JOURNAL, and LITERATURE. KEEP THIS SYLLABUS IN THE FRONT OF YOUR NOTEBOOK FOR THE ENTIRE SEMESTER! You will have anotebook test at the end of each nine weeks worth up to 100 points. You must have your notebook with you in class in order to take the test.

2. HOMEWORK - Each homework assignment should be dated and labeled. Homework may be checked for a daily grade or a pop quiz grade. You will not receive any credit for homework that is late. If you have an excused absence, show me your homework the DAY THAT YOU RETURN; otherwise, you will receive a zero. A majority of your work will be done in class; therefore, good attendance is very important!

3. MAKE-UP WORK - You are responsible for finding out about make-up work on the day you return to school by reading the make-up work notebook located on the table beside the podium. You may also check the assignments on my school web page at countyhigh.com for any missed assignments. (Just find my name under faculty directory.) You have two days to make arrangements with me for making up missed assignments or tests. After that you will receive a zero. No work may be made up for an unexcused absence. After five absences, you must present a doctor’s excuse to make up work. Tests, quizzes, or assignments announced prior to an absence will be taken or turned in on the day you return. If you miss any spelling/vocabulary tests, you can make them up during class on Fridays. All other make-up work may be turned in during your class period. If you know that you are going to be absent in advance, get your assignments ahead of time.

4. GRADING - Grades for this class will be calculated on a point system. At the end of the grading period, the number of points you have earned will be compared to the number of points possible. Students are encouraged to check grades on-line through the Inow Student/Parent Portal. Nine weeks exams will count approximately 10-20% of the nine week’s grade. You will have a comprehensive final exam at the end of the school year worth 20% of your final grade. You may be exempt from this exam if you follow the exam exemption policy as stated in your Student/Parent Information Guide. You will have many opportunities to earn grades during the year through homework, tests, and quizzes.

5. SPELLING/VOCABULARY - You must have a dictionary at home to complete spelling and vocabulary work. During the first semester, you will have spelling tests. On Monday you will copy twenty-five words and write a sentence with each word. This will be due on Tuesday. On Thursday you will spell all twenty-five words on a twenty-five point test. We will do vocabulary during the second semester. You will be given ten words. You will define them and write a sentence with each. The tests will be on Thursdays and will be worth twenty points. You will spell, define, and write a sentence with them.

6. JOURNALS–For the first semester, you will write on various subjects in the journal section of your notebook. Label and date each entry. They will be graded on effort and compliance with the assignments’ directions.

7. MISCELLANEOUS - Show this syllabus to your parents, have them sign it, and return it to me for a grade. If I must contact your parents during the school year, I would like for them to already know my expectations for you. If your parents need to discuss your performance or behavior with me, they may contact the school and make an appointment or leave a message for me to contact them. I may be reached via email at . If a behavior problem exists, I will discuss it with you, call your parents, and/or send you to see an administrator. I post all assignments and class information on my web page on the school’s web site.

9. TENATIVE COURSE SYLLABUS- Spelling and Vocabulary; Business Letters, Resumes, Applications, and Interviews; Capitalization and Punctuation; Parts of Speech; Parts of a Sentence;Phrases and Clauses; Agreement; Verb, Pronoun, Adjective, and Adverb Usage; Plurals, Glossary of Usage, and Words Often Confused; Writing Skills (Paragraphs and Sentences); Research Paper (A Raisin in the Sun), Journals; ACT and Study Skills; Modern and Contemporary Poetry and Short Stories; A Raisin in the Sun, and Killing Mr. Griffin. Nonfiction will be incorporated in each literature unit.

*Some of the content of the stories, novels, and videos occasionally contain strong language; however, theseselections have been approved. This will be handled in an appropriate and tasteful manner in class.

10. SUPPLIES - You will need pens/pencils, a three-ring binder with four dividers, paper, index cards, and a dictionary to use at home. (Cell phone dictionaries are fine.)
