Syllabus for Latin III at Fort Defiance High School

In all levels of Latin, the emphasis is on translation. We follow the exercises, vocabulary lessons and readings in the Cambridge Latin Coursein the first three years of Latin study. Aside from daily grades based on oral translations and exercises, we have frequent vocabulary quizzes and occasional projects based on linguistic studies and cultural information. Each student has a folder in the classroom that should be checked daily for returned material. There is also a 3X5 card for each student on which daily work is recorded. The card grades are averaged into the daily quiz grades and any six weeks’ assessments are weighted as 20 percent of the six weeks’ grades. The lowest quiz grade is dropped each six weeks (everyone deserves one bad day), with the exception of a zero recorded for cheating (which simply will not be tolerated). Those who are unhappy with a quiz grade may have one chance to repeat that quiz, in which case both grades will be averaged. If a student is completely unprepared for a quiz, s/he may postpone it until the next day…once per six weeks. Abuse of these privileges will put them at risk of being eliminated. Exam grades at the end of the semester count as 20 percent of the overall grade.

In the event of a student’s absence, s/he should consult the calendar on the folders’ table that shows daily work and scheduled quizzes. This information may also be found in the calendar on the Latin section of the school website. Missed work should be made up within three days of the student’s return to school. Though I will accept make-up work after the three days grace period, the grade will be lowered by a letter grade or more, depending on how much time has elapsed.

It is expected that each student will come to class prepared to work, with notebooks (preferably loose-leaf, containing a separate section just for vocabulary, which may be taken up for a grade at some point), textbooks, pencils already sharpened, and an attitude respectful of others and eager to learn.

Latin IV: This course will review and continue the study of Latin. The

primary goal is to increase the students' ability to read Latin and acquire

meaning from the passages read. Roman history, mythology, culture, and

Latin and English grammar will be highlighted at appropriate times.

In 2014, the Latin IV students will translate readings from a survey of Golden Age authors, e.g., Ovid’s myths, poems by Horace, Catullus, and Vergil, or selections from Cicero and Caesar. In addition to daily translations and translation quizzes, the students will learn to scan Latin poetry and do occasional projects to reflect their understanding of the works read and their appreciation of the literary merits of the passages.

The grading scale is based on the Augusta County standard, as follows:

A+ = 99-100 B+ = 88-89 C+ = 78-79 D+ = 68-69 F = below 60

A = 92-97 B = 82-87 C = 72-77 D = 62-67

A- = 90-91 B- = 80-81 C- = 70-71 D- = 60-61
