Band Saw

Conditions For Use

·  Only trained teachers and ancillary staff may use this equipment.

·  Limited use by year 9-10 students who have already proven competency.

Hazards

·  High risk of injury by impact from broken blade, amputation and laceration from sharp edges on work pieces.

Operation

·  Wear Apron and Safety Glasses and ear protection, NO gloves. Roll up long sleeves.

·  Check that dust-extraction is in operation and gate open.

·  One operator only in the machine space.

·  Adjust the guard to suit the height of the work piece. The top guide should be set to the lowest possible position and the part of the blade above it properly guarded.

·  Keep fingers clear of the saw line.

·  Do not make adjustments to the machine until it stops.

·  No pieces smaller than 200mm may be cut.

·  Cut gentle curves only.

·  For cuts that do not continue through a piece, withdraw the work-piece carefully while the blade is moving (the work piece can pull the blade off the guides and pulley.)

·  Turn off power and lock equipment after use.

Emergency Stop

In the event of an emergency, turn equipment off at power source or emergency stop and report to the Teacher in charge.

Bench Press

Conditions For Use

·  First-time users must ask teacher to demonstrate operation of the equipment.

Hazards

·  Risk of serious injury by crushing finger between punch and die.

Operation

·  Wear apron.

·  Teacher to check setup (alignment and condition of punch and die).

·  Keep fingers well away from the punch and die.

Centre Lathe

Conditions For Use

·  Only trained teachers and ancillary staff and Year 10 students may use this equipment.

·  Direct supervision of new students. General supervision of experienced students.

·  Trained staff to check the students initial set up of machine:

o  Check job is held tightly in the Chuck,

o  Tool bit on centre,

o  Tool-post is tightened.

·  Machine to be isolated at all times when not in use.

Hazards

·  Risk of serious injury by laceration by shavings, eye injury, entanglement with rotating parts, entrapment and impact by thrown work piece and chuck key.

·  Contact with cutting fluids, oil and grease can irritate skin.

Operation

·  Wear Apron and Safety Glasses. Roll up long sleeves.

·  Always remove the chuck key from the lathe chuck.

·  Do not use cracked or damaged tools.

·  Always use guards - check they operate properly.

·  Do not touch revolving chuck, tail-stock or work pieces.

·  Do not allow a build-up of waste in the lathe bed.

·  Always use the correct tools for the job.

·  One operator only in the workspace.

Emergency Stop

In the event of an emergency, turn equipment off at power source or emergency stop and report to the Teacher in charge.

Combination Roller-Guillotine

Conditions For Use

·  First-time users must ask Teacher to demonstrate operation of the equipment.

·  Only Form III and above may use this equipment.

·  Two operators are required to use this machine as a guillotine.

Hazards

·  Risk of serious injury by severing fingers between blades and crushing between rollers.

Operation

·  Wear Apron and Safety Glasses, no gloves.

·  Guard to cutters must be in place at all times.

·  Keep fingers clear of rollers when operating.

·  Do not attempt to cut sheet material thicker than 1mm.

·  Call Teacher in case of any problems.

Compressed Air Tools

Conditions For Use

·  First-time users must ask teacher for demonstration.

·  Year 7 are not allowed to use air tools.

·  Students are not allowed to use the airline hose and reel or the Air Gun.

·  Students are not to attach or remove air lines from outlets.

Hazards

·  Contact with the open end of a compressed air line can force air through the skin into the bloodstream.

·  Some air tools are noisy and may cause long term hearing loss.

Operation

·  Wear Apron, Safety Glasses and ear protection.

·  Take care to avoid projecting debris into eyes.

Pop Rivet Gun:

·  Ensure exhaust vent is pointed away from others.

Air Drill:

·  Secure drill bit with chuck key before connecting to air line.

·  Remove chuck key prior to use.

Rotary Grinder:

·  Clamp work piece.

·  Hold Rotary Grinder with two hands.

Linisher:

·  Wear Dust Mask.

·  When changing belts disconnect airline.

Disc Sander

Conditions For Use

·  First-time users must ask Teacher to demonstrate operation of the equipment.

Hazards

·  Work piece can jam in between disc and work table if held at angle.

·  Any contact with the moving disc will cause grazing.

·  If the wrong side of the disc is used the work piece may fly up.

Operation

·  Wear Apron, Safety Glasses and Ear Protection.

·  Use only right half of disc. Use guide as required.

·  Pull out gate for dust extraction.

·  Place work piece flat on the table at all times.

·  One operator only in front of the safety line.

·  Operator is not to talk with anyone.

·  No one is to talk with the operator (except supervisor)

·  No piece smaller than 50mm is to be used.

·  Thickness of work-piece is to be between 3mm and 100mm.

·  When finished switch off sander and push in dust extraction gate.

·  Isolate from mains power when finished.

Emergency Stop

In the event of an emergency, turn equipment off at power source or emergency stop and report to the Teacher in charge.

Domino Joiner

Conditions For Use

·  First-time users must ask Teacher to demonstrate operation of the equipment.

·  Form III and IV students only.

Hazards

·  Power cord can represent a risk of electric shock and tripping.

·  Router bit can represent a risk of cutting or gouging of hands.

·  Dust produced represents a risk to breathing and lungs.

·  Noise may represent long term risk to hearing.

Operation

·  Work pieces must be fixed to working surface with a clamp or vice.

·  Domino joiner must be plugged in to portable extractor both electrically and with dust pipe. (Domino joiner is not to be plugged directly into power-point.)

·  Wear apron, safety glasses and ear protection.

·  Do not be distracted when using this equipment.

Emergency Stop

In the event of an emergency, turn equipment off at switch, power source and report to the Teacher in charge.

Magnabend

Conditions For Use

·  First-time users must ask Teacher to demonstrate operation of the equipment.

Hazards

·  Low risks of injury by crushing between electromagnetic clamping parts and impact by manually manipulated parts.

Operation

·  Wear Apron.

·  Keep hands and fingers well clear of folding blades.

·  Call Teacher in case of any problems.

Bench Shear

Conditions For Use

·  First-time users must ask Teacher to demonstrate operation of the equipment.

·  Form I students are not to use this equipment.

Hazards

·  Risk of serious injury by severing fingers between blades and crushing between clamps and the table.

Operation

·  Wear Apron.

·  Lever handle to be removed at all times when not in use.

·  Keep fingers well away from shear surfaces.

·  Make sure there are no other people in the vicinity.

·  Call for assistance if something doesn’t look right.

·  Don’t attempt to cut materials thicker than 1 mm.

·  Be aware of sharp edges of the work piece.

Hand Tools

Conditions For Use

First-time users must ask Teacher to demonstrate operation of the equipment.

Hazards

·  Sharp tools can cause cuts.

·  Falling tools can present a hazard.

·  Tools can break or come apart in use.

·  Slipping can occur when pressure is applied to tools.

Operation

General

·  Sharp edges or points of tools to be carried or stored, should be protected.

·  Where possible work to be held in vice or securely clamped.

Saws

·  Use safety glasses.

·  Check the blade before use. Use the correct blade for the work.

·  Fingers should be kept well clear of the cutting blade / knife.

·  Reduce pressure on the blade when finishing the cut.

Tinsnips

·  Hold snips so that the handles will not pinch your hand.

·  Beware of the sharp edges of cut metal.

Files

·  Files must never be used without a handle.

·  Loose handles must be re-secured or replaced.

Screwdrivers

·  Both hands should be kept behind the blade when applying pressure.

·  Screwdrivers should not be used as chisels.

Spanners

·  The correct size spanner to fit the nut or bolt head should always be used.

Hot Glue Gun

Conditions For Use

·  First-time users must ask Teacher to demonstrate operation of the equipment.

Hazards

·  Risk of injury from burns.

·  The power cord can present a risk of electric shock.

Operation

·  Wear Apron. Form I students must wear cotton gloves.

·  Check power cord. If connections don’t look right or if the cord has been damaged, notify Teacher and do not use the gun.

·  Do not touch the hot tip.

·  Avoid getting hot glue on skin.

·  If a skin burn occurs, immediately put affected area under running cold tap water for a minimum of 10 minutes and thereafter seek first aid.

Hot Wire Cutter

Conditions For Use

·  First-time users must ask Teacher to demonstrate operation of the equipment.

Hazards

·  The power cord can present a risk of electric shock and tripping.

·  Fumes and smoke may be hazardous.

·  Contact of hot wire with skin can cause burns.

Operation

·  Wear Apron.

·  Hot wire cutters should be used only to cut expanded polystyrene material.

·  Check power cord. If connections don’t look right or if the cord has been damaged, notify Teacher and do not use the equipment.

·  Provide adequate ventilation and use under fume hood where possible.

·  Only engage foot switch when required for a cut.

·  When finished, turn off power and disconnect from mains.

Emergency Stop

In the event of an emergency, turn equipment off at power source or emergency stop and report to the Teacher in charge.

Laser Engraver

Conditions For Use

·  Trained staff and year 9-10 Students only.

Hazards

·  AC input power is potentially lethal. Do not open any of the access panels on the rear of the machine while it is plugged in.

·  The machine represents a significant fire hazard and should never be left unattended.

Operation

·  Wear Apron.

·  Remove all flammable products within 2 metres of the machine.

·  Never operate the machine without the ventilation of the fumes to outside as the fumes may be toxic depending on the material used.

·  Never operate the machine unattended.

·  Never operate with any of the covers or enclosures removed and never modify the enclosure.

Emergency Stop

In the event of an emergency, turn equipment off at power source or emergency stop and report to the Teacher in charge.

Milling Machine

Conditions For Use

·  Only students in Form IV may use this equipment.

·  First-time users must ask Teacher to demonstrate operation of the equipment.

Hazards

·  Milling bit can break and cause injury to hands or eyes.

Operation

·  Wear Apron, Safety Glasses and hearing protection. Roll up long sleeves.

·  Turn light on.

·  A Teacher must chose and set tool, cutting depth and feed speed.

·  Switch off power when finished.

Emergency Stop

In the event of an emergency, turn equipment off at power source or emergency stop and report to the Teacher in charge.

Mini Drills

Conditions For Use

First-time users must ask Teacher to demonstrate operation of the equipment.

Hazards

·  Drill can break and cause injury to hands

·  Eye injury from flying chips.

·  Work piece can become a projectile.

Operation

·  Wear Apron, Safety Glasses.

·  Use mini vice to hold work piece.

·  Use Drills smaller than 5mm only.

·  Ensure drill bit is centred and tightened in chuck.

·  Remove chuck key.

·  Adjust drill height as required, do not build up the table.

·  Drill slowly.

·  Switch off power and disconnect from power source when finished.

Emergency Stop

In the event of an emergency, turn equipment off at power source or emergency stop and report to the Teacher in charge.

Pedestal Drill

Conditions For Use

·  First-time users must ask Teacher to demonstrate operation of the equipment.

·  Use only for drilling wood, plastics and metal.

Hazards

·  Drill can break and cause injury to hands.

·  Eye injury from flying chips.

·  Work piece can become a projectile.

Operation

·  Wear Apron, Safety Glasses.

·  Use vice or clamp to hold work piece.

·  Ensure drill bit is centred and secured in chuck.

·  Adjust base plate height as required. Do not build up table.

·  Position guard and slowly lower to drill hole.

·  Switch off power and disconnect from source when finished.

·  Make sure spindle has stopped before removing work or waste.

Emergency Stop

In the event of an emergency, turn equipment off at power source or emergency stop and report to the Teacher in charge.

Portable Power Tools

Conditions For Use

First-time users must ask Teacher to demonstrate operation of the equipment.

Hazards

·  Risk of electric shock.

·  Contact with sharp or abrasive moving or rotating parts can cause cuts.

·  Trailing cables can present a tripping hazard.

·  Portable power tools can present a noise hazard.

·  Dust can cause injury to lungs.

Operation

·  Wear Apron, Safety Glasses, ear protection and Dust Mask as required.

·  Connect tool to portable extractor where possible.

·  Check power lead and plug. Do not use if damaged.

·  Make sure the ON/OFF switch on the machine is in the OFF position. Turn on power at the outlet socket. Turn on at machine when ready.
