PERSONAL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT (PPE)
/ Safety glasses, worn under a welder’s helmet with proper arc flash grade visor.. / / Long and loose hair must be tied back.
Cotton beanie or equivalent hair containment / spark resistant covering.
/ Appropriate footwear must be worn when preforming arc welding. Shoe must be fully enclosed. No open toed shoes allowed. / / Close fitting/protective clothing must be worn.
100% cotton clothing or coveralls
Leather welders jacket
Flameproof welders apron
/ Rings and jewelry (long necklaces / bracelets, etc.) must not be worn. Lighters, matches and cell phones are not allowed in the shop area when the shop is operational.
Flameproof welders gloves are required / / Hearing protection must be worn as per shop location protocols and when using this machine constantly for an extended period of time. Hearing protection is always recommended when performing arc welding
Other PPE Considerations / Dust / vapor masks may be required depending on material being worked on and potential worker senilities.

SAFE WORK PROCEDURE
DO NOT use this machine or perform this process unless a supervisor / teacher instructed you in safe procedures / operation and have given you authorization to perform associated tasks.
Always use tools and equipment for their intended purposes only.
Always take out of service and report damaged equipment to your supervisor / teacher without delay.
Pre-Job Safety:
1)Inspect work area, clean area before starting work and remove any debris. Take note of where fire extinguishers are. Turn on air vents.
2)If using portable units, set up screens or proper welding curtains.
3)Remove all flammable materials and work a safe distance from flammable substances. Ensure area is dry, including clothing, work area, cables, torch and power source.
4)Gather all PPE and inspect all PPE, check the welding helmet for any cracks and that the fit is correct.
5)Ensure that the jacket, apron and gloves are not ripped or torn and that they are all dry. Put all PPE on prior to starting to weld.
Set Up:
6)Inspect the MIG welding unit: Visually inspect the power cord for exposed wire or frayed insulation. Visually inspect all electrodes and work cables for exposed wire or frayed insulation. Visually inspect the gas cylinder for cracks in hoses, and that they are properly secured and away from heat or welding surface.
Operate / Perform Process:
7)Clean off object to be welded.
8)Spray weld primer onto the object that is to be welded.
9)Open gas until pressure is 25psi on flow meter.
10)Attach grounding clamp on object near area to be welded.
11)Plug in welding unit.
12)Put on welding helmet, put on welding gloves.
13)Conduct test welds on scrap metal to achieve the proper wire feed speed.
14)Touch wire to metal while moving in a smooth motion. Constantly holding down the torch trigger.
15)Adjust the wire feed speed until desired weld is achieved.
16)Weld metal object.
17)Chip away and slag with hammer.
18)Turn off gas. Pull trigger to get all excessive gas out of line. Turn off welding unit.
Post Job Procedure:
19)If using portable MIG, unplug welding unit and return welding unit to storage area.
20)Put away all tools once they have cooled.
21)Put away all PPE.
22)Notify Instructor of any damaged tools, PPE or any problems with MIG welding unit.
Lockout:
  1. Unplug unit
  2. Apply plug lockout device to plug end
  3. Apply lock and tag to lockout devise as per established lockout protocols
