President’s Report (Aaran Duncan)

The 2012-13 swimming season has been an interesting one for our club both in and out of the water.

In the water the Head Coach’s Report details the achievements of our swimmers and coaches at an International, National, State, Metropolitan, and Area level. From a competitive perspective, this is an amazing effort from all involved – from swimmer to parent to coach to club. Results like this are borne from the co-operation of all involved and all are to be congratulated and celebrated.

The above results are fantastic but I want to also congratulate the swimmers who didn’t medal at the above events or even qualified for the above. I want to congratulate the swimmers that try hard at training, try hard at Club and at local carnivals, and do their best at representing the Club and themselves.

While we are a competitive club, we also encourage participation and fun. One look at Friday night club will tell you that our future is in good hands. Our young swimmers are keen and enthusiastic and judging by the smiles, having a great time too.

Out of the water it has also been a busy time for us. During the last year, we held two carnivals, summer and winter. These were our major fundraisers, all of which were hugely successful. I would like to thank our sponsors and supporters, and everyone who helped with the carnivals.

Socially, we also had the summer presentation at the Sutherland United Services Club one of our major supporters’, which is always a fun night and the winter presentation at the pool where the kids went crazy on the inflatable. We also held pizza nights and BBQs which are always fun.

Membership numbers have slightly declined by 19% at 139 members this year compared to last year of 172. This is overall still pleasing considering the competition of other sports such as Water Polo, surf, and also other swim clubs in the area. Our membership numbers at the National level has reduced through the year; however, we have seen an increase in membership at the Junior swimmer level, This gives the Club a solid foundation to build upon.

From a financial perspective the Treasurer’s Report shows that the Club is in a healthy position. The Net Profit for the year was $10,216 with built up capital of over $28,000.

Our club does not operate in isolation. It takes swimmers, coaches, parents, volunteers, technical officials and the leisure centre staff to continue to work together to provide opportunities to our swimmers. Thank you to everyone that has participated during the past year, no matter how small that may be as it all helps.

I would particularly like to thank the committee for their efforts over the past year – they are an amazing team of dedicated people all of whom contribute without question. Thanks must also go to Jim Powell as our Starter for his unwavering support to ensure the swimmers are able to have qualifying time trials at club and help to correct racing techniques. Thank you must go also to the MetSEA technical officials who helped us through the year.

So while the Club is in reasonable shape, we need to continue to work hard, as our swimmers do, to achieve success. Please consider assisting in any way you can – there is a role to suit everyone and everyone’s circumstances. What you may consider to be a small contribution can make a huge difference overall. Swimming is a sport for life and a very rewarding one at that – as you become more involved, you come to realise that swimming truly is a team sport. It is not individual. It is only through the efforts of the team that amazing results can be achieved.

Aaran Duncan.
