Purpose Statement
The Government Relations Manager focuses on developing relationships with State Government and enhancing the profile of Surf Life Saving NSW as the peak water safety body in NSW. Working closely with the CEO, this role is responsible for the development of major funding proposals which meet the core needs of the organisation. In addition, account management of major government grants including acquittals, reports and compliance will be an important part of this role. Provision of expert government relations advice and advocacy initiatives on behalf of the members is required.
Selection Criteria
Essential / Desirable
- Tertiary qualifications in Public Policy, Political Studies, Social Sciences or related field;
- Previous experience in a similar role preferably in a not for profit environment;
- Demonstrated success working with government representatives and securing government funding
- High level written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Ability to multi task and prioritise
- Professionally presented and spoken
- Exceptional relationship builder
- Strategic thinker and financial competency
- Active interest and understanding of the political environment and processes within Australia
- Experience writing significant funding proposals
- Demonstrated success delivering high-quality grants and acquittals to secure funding
- Ability to work under pressure
- Preparedness to work occasional weekends and non-traditional hours as required in a NFP organisation.
- Understanding and knowledge of Surf Life Saving and the Not for Profit sector;
- Well-developed network of contacts within the government arena.

Role Specific responsibilities
Accountabilities / Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s)
- Work closely with the CEO to leverage government relationships to enhance the profile of SLSNSW
- Develop contacts and relationships with key government stakeholders including State members of Parliament, government representatives and departments
- Ensure Surf Life Saving NSW is well represented on policy matters and other issues to government
- Identify and analyse political trends, monitor current issues and provide information and advice to the CEO
- Development of submissions, reports and papers that influence policy
- Act as the Secretariat of the Parliamentary Friends of SLSNSW group and coordinate meetings
- As required, represent SLSNSW at government meetings/forums/events
- Coordinate and prepare ministerial briefings for the CEO, setting up meetings with relevant Ministers as required
- Coordinate meetings, groups and events that support Government relations and strategic objectives of SLSNSW
- Actively monitor Parliamentary debate, identify emerging issues and developments within Government which could impact upon SLSNSW and its activities
- Inform CEO of any significant political issues
- Identification and mapping of political influencers (political and bureaucratic)
- Lead, coordinate and manage the development of major funding proposals ensuring timely submissions
- Manage grant contracts and ensure full compliance with grant reporting requirements
- Work with the CFO in the reporting and acquittal of major government grants.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
Internal: The Government Relations Manager interacts closely with the CEO in the day to day activities of the role and the CFO in management of major government grants. Liaises with the management teams on various funding and initiatives to enhance the profile of SLSNSW.
External: NSWministers and government departments, policy advisors and ministerial staff.
