CommUNITY

September 10: Kickoff Sunday

Bible passage: Galatians 1:6-10

Lesson Summary: We are called into community on the basis of the Gospel, and there is only one Gospel message—the Good News of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection. At the beginning of the book of Galatians, Paul is writing to the church that he started in Galatia, where things had already started to get messy. Some people were saying one thing and some another, but they weren’t cohesive on their views of the Gospel. Paul makes it clear that there is only one Gospel, though, and anything that doesn’t align with that isn’t actually the Gospel. But he also emphasizes how important it is to be unified around what it is important.

Supporting Activity: CommUNITY Tree!

Each child in kidzone will be given a piece of paper, which they will trace their hand on, and write their name. They will then colour and decorate the hand, and then cut it out. All the handprints will be put onto the community tree in the Kidzone large group room. (Any newcomers each week can also add their hand). → This would be a great opportunity for grade 5’s and 6’s to help lead younger students.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What is the Gospel? And why is it important for us to share its message?
  2. Why was Paul upset? What were some of the people of Galatia doing?
  3. Why is it important for us to be unified around what is important?
  4. In verse 10, Paul writes ‘Am I now trying to win the approval of men, or of God? Or am I trying to please men? If I were still trying to please men, I would not be a servant of Christ’. What is wrong with trying to win the approval of other people? Whose approval do you seek?

Grade 1/2 / / Just like there is one Gospel, it only takes one cut to make a cross (mind=blown)
Grade 3/4 / / Just like there is one Gospel, it only takes one cut to make a cross (mind=blown)
Grade 5/6 / -Go through the discussion questions together (as outlined above) / (For this age group, crafts were not very successful. They really valued discussion and time for connection with leaders and eachother.)

JK/SK

Week 1 SHORT discussion (they have a hard time sitting for a short amount of time)

What is the gospel that Paul is talking about in today’s passage?

  • The gospel of Jesus Christ which is that he lived, died for us, and rose again.

“Jesus lived, he then willingly died on the cross for us, and then he rose from the grave!”

Activity/craft

  • Have tables set up with chairs and hand out colouring sheets (10-20 sheets)
  • Put out markers and pencil crayons - they also like to use the glue glitter with paintbrushes
  • Some kids enjoy playing with lego and dinosaurs when they are finished and some like to draw more or play jenga

September 17: Regular

Bible passage: Galatians 2:11-14

Lesson Summary: Paul’s main point of Galatians is to gather a group of people together in unity. The church is a new community, new thing, and new way of doing life. Yet the first this that we see is conflict. Paul opposes Peter because Peter was being exclusive. Who do we allow / not allow at our table? How do we handle conflict in our community?

Discussion Questions:

  1. Why is unity and community so important?
  2. When we live in community, how do we benefit?
  3. In 2:11 it says that Paul opposed Peter ‘to his face’. He didn’t go to other church leaders and ‘tattle’, or tell others to not follow his example. If you disagree with someone, what do you normally do? How do you handle conflict?
