SUPPORT FOR A VISA FOR NEW APPLICANTS - CERTIFICATE OF ACCEPTANCE FOR STUDIES (CAS)

What is a CAS?

If you have to apply for a UK visa to study at the University of Edinburgh you will need to have a reference number that you can give to the visa authorities to show that you have an unconditional offer. This reference is called the Certificate of Acceptance for Studies, or CAS. We will provide a CAS for each unconditional offer you accept, but you must choose which one to use when you apply for your UK visa.

When will we send you the CAS?

When you have accepted an unconditional offer we will apply for a CAS from the UKBA and send it to you together with other information you will need. However, as the CAS remains valid for only six months from its creation, we will email it to you no earlier than six months before the start of your studies with us. If the UKBA chooses to refuse you a CAS we will let you know that as well. Please note that we cannot send the CAS to you until you have accepted an unconditional offer given to you.

What does the university need from me now?

Although you have provided us with much information with your application for studies, before we can send you a CAS we need you to tell us your passport number, your country of birth, and your name AS SHOWN ON YOUR PASSPORT.

Please send us this information NOW as shown.

What do I have to do?

Please carry out the following steps:

Step 1. Complete this table, leaving blank any fields not applicable to you:

Family Name / Other Names / Passport Number / Date of expiry of current UK student visa / Type of entry sought
(Undergraduate,
Postgraduate, Visiting Student) / UCAS Number / Country of Birth
As shown on your passport / This must be the passport you will use at the time you apply for your UK visa / Leave blank if this does not apply to you / Undergraduate, or
Postgraduate, or
Visiting UG, or
Visiting PG, or
PGDE (Teaching) / If you have applied for Undergraduate study using the UCAS system / As shown on your passport

Step 2. Copy this table into your own computer with the name “CAS Information”. Saving it as an Excel (.xms) or Word (.doc) document is preferred.

Step 3. Look at the clearance check record we have sent you in your on-line application portal, and respond by uploading your completed file called “CAS Information”.
