Supply List: Beginning Machine Quilting
Instructor: Bethany Morelli
Date: October 25, November 1 and 8
Time: 10:30-1 or 6:30-9
Book/Pattern Requirements:
Beginners Guide to Free-Motion Quilting by Natalia Bonner
The class will explore the following: preparing your quilt for quilting, using your walking foot for straight lines and curves, beginner free-motion quilting, basic design choices, marking the quilt, using rulers to guide free-motion quilting
Fabric Requirements:
Make 5 practice pieces: each approximately a18” x 22” batting/muslin sandwich (use ½ yard muslin each, cut on fabric fold, and layer)
Tools Required:
Sewing machine in good working condition with manual. You must know how to lower the feed dogs on your machine. (You can use our classroom machines)
Walking foot
Free Motion Quilting Foot (I like Bernina #9)
You can bring your Bernina BSR foot
Fabric scissors
Ruler
Threads:
1) Cotton quilting thread 40 weight and 50 weight, any colors
2) Bring any other threads (embroidery thread or mono/poly invisible thread) you are intrigued by – this is a good place to try them out!
3) Bobbin wound with a lighter cotton thread like Auriful. The color is not important.
Needles: quilting needles 75/11. Also note the needle recommendations for any other threads you bring
Pens: I use a mechanical chalk pencil (white and gray), a Clover chalk roller and a water soluble marker. This collection can usually take care of everything.
Pre-Class Homework:
Layer and pin or spray the batting and muslin to create your practice pieces before class. See pg. 18 for guidance on pin basting. Since this is just a practice piece, you don’t need very many pins. There will not be space to do this during class time.
Highly Recommended but not required for class:
1) An extension table for your machine to increase the flat working space. The more flat space you have, the better your quilting looks. It’s that simple. Even though it is a bother, bring this to class if you have it. It will make you more comfortable while you quilt.
2) Quilting gloves. I like Machingers. I can’t free motion without these.
3) Golden Threads quilting paper
4) Quilt Pounce for use with stencils (I use the kind that you iron off – not the one that is pure chalk that rubs off easily)
