* T1 is sampling time one, T2 is time two. See main text for detail.

† Strategy assignment based on original trait assignments of Datry et al. (2014), which included one more resistance trait (low rheophily) and one more resilience trait (long adult lifespan) than the assignments used in the present study.

‡ Strategy assignment based on the trait assignments of Datry et al. (2014) as used in the present study, for which long adult lifespan and low rheophily were excluded on the consensus of all authors that these two traits were not as clearly indicative of resilience or resistance (respectively) as the retained traits. Boldface type indicates taxa for which there was a strategy change between the original and adapted assignments. For interest, we analysed the data using the original four-five trait system and our three-four system; results were strongly consistent.

§ ‘Consistent’ core taxa of I (or P) sites were never lost at T2 from any I (or P) site, as relevant to each column. ‘Consistent(I)’ = only a consistent core taxon for I sites, i.e., not also a consistent core taxon for P sites. ‘Consistent(P)’ = only a consistent core taxon for P sites, i.e., not also a consistent core taxon for I sites. ‘Other’ core taxa, although present at T1 and T2 in at least one I (or P) site, were also lost at T2 from at least one other I (P) site, as relevant to each column. ‘Absent’ = taxon not found in any I (or P) sites, as relevant to each column. -, not a core taxon (consistent or otherwise).
