Workshop A-

Superhero(in)es—A Creative Nonfiction Workshop with Jennifer Lee

When you look back, who saved you? I don’t mean who fed you or put a roof over head, or even who took you in when you ran away from home. I don’t mean a real person. I’m talking about someone you met up with in comic books or on TV, in the movies or Nancy Drew mysteries, marvelous beasts you met down by the creek, space aliens who dropped into the abandoned lot across the street. Superwoman or the Black Panther or Batman, Dr. Spock or Sporty Spice, Mafatu inCall It Courageor Mr. Rogers in his cardigan and sneakers. Ordinary and extraordinary beings who understood and guided you, who had your back.

In the morning session, we’ll generate material. If you have a souvenir from that time—a book, image, magic bracelet—bring it with you. If you have a photograph of yourself from back then, bring that too. If you have neither of these things, don’t worry in the least. We’ll all be working from memory. In the afternoon session, you’ll take the material you’ve generated and shape it into a lyric essay—a playful, poetic, memoir. We’ll experiment with openings, with inserting dialogue, and conjuring magical scenes. We’ll talk about getting your kid’s voice and your adult voice onto the page together. We’ll work on sentences that are sharp and true. At the end of the day, you’ll have a beautiful personal essay in your hands. A part of yourself there. *please note this is an all day workshop

Workshop B –Tony Norman, a well-known friend and supporter of the WPWP, will do what he does best by leading participants in a day long workshop focusing on raising and writing your voice! There is too much going on in today’s world to believe you don’t have anything to say! Participants will be encouraged to compose what they are concerned about, and share… if they dare.

* please note this is an all day workshop
