Specials: All grades visit the STEM lab, art, library, computer lab and music weekly.
P.E. - Raiders attend Physical Education three times a week
Recess - Every student goes to recess daily for twenty minutes (kindergarten may have an extra recess, depending on their class’ schedule).
Engaged Learning Units - SISD is committed to innovative learning. Our students participate in Engaged Learning Units (ELU’s), which are designed with future-readiness in mind. Students complete four ELU’s per year, with the third grade making a trip to NASA at the culmination of one of their units.
STEM Program: The STEM (Science, Technology, Math, Engineering and Mathematics) program is based around a set curriculum for all students. For example, one grade may be working on a unit about wind. They may make pinwheels and then ultimately create windmills in their groups. The goal is to understand the Science, Technology, Math and Engineering behind Wind and its many benefits to our environment and society.
Makerspace - Students may attend the Makerspace At LEAST monthly - many classes go more than once a month, depending on schedule.
What is a Makerspace? Similar to the STEM Lab, the Makerspace allows for choice and creativity in all activities. Students may choose to work with art supplies, with green screen technology, work with circuits, build - using Legos, blocks, or Lincoln Logs, play with Marble Run, or create with Makey Makey or Little Bits. Student creativity and choice have no limits in the Makerspace.
Technology: Students visit the computer lab weekly. Grades 3 and 4 have laptops in the classroom, so their computer lab time is in the classroom.
While in the computer lab, students are working on the Technology TEKS. How? By coding, working in online programs such as Istation and Education Galaxy among other enriching activities.
