Summit Fire District – Fire Chief Application
Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Summit Fire Department to use the traditional values and commitment of the volunteer and career fire service, coupled with the innovative tools and evolving technologies of the present to provide the highest level of service to those we serve.
Summit Fire District is the result of the merger between Doney Park Fire District and Timberline Fire District. The merger was taken to the public for a vote on March 13, 2001. The merger passed by a 92% vote from the people. In 2008 Summit Fire District merged with Fort Valley. Summit Fire District is considered a Special District. It is governed by a five person Fire Board that is elected. The Fire Boards main objective is to oversee the finances of The District. Each fiscal year the Fire Board works closely with the Fire Chief and Administration to create a budget as per state regulations.
The district currently covers 90 square miles, with a population of about 12,000. It is primarily residential. Three stations cover 68 square miles on the east side of the City of Flagstaff covering parts of US Highway 89, and I-40. The other 22 square miles are covered by 2 stations on the west side of the city and covers areas of US Highway 180 and approximately 3 miles of Snow Bowl Road.
Like all good fire departments we are multifaceted, our services include:
- 24/7 Emergency Medical Services
- Fire Protection
- Provide mutual aide to National Park Service Structural and Wildland Fire, Arizona State Lands Department, United States Forest Service, Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council, Guardian Ambulance and Coconino County Sheriff’s Office
- Fire Prevention, Building Inspections, Hydrant Inspections

We are good neighbors and partner with our local elementary school, Sturgeon Cromer Elementary School. We assist with events and programs at the school. We also have a community garden that provides learning opportunities to the students.
We are associated with Arizona Fire Districts Associations, Arizona Fire Chief Association, Arizona Wildfire and Incident Management Academy, and Ponderosa Fire Advisory Council. Additional information regarding Summit Fire District is available on our website, under the tab Fire Chief Applicants.
Deploying minimum daily staffing of 10 personnel, The District responds to approximately 1200 calls per year.
The Summit Fire District maintains a fleet of more than 25 vehicles. They range from a 1989 – GMC Brigadier to 2013 Ford F350. Ambulance services are provided by Guardian Medical Transport that is based out of Flagstaff. We recently purchased an ambulance to work as a non-emergency vehicle for our para-medicine program.
As a career department, SFD employs highly qualified and dedicated individuals. Summit Fire District feels that our personnel are our most important assets. We provided services to our citizens with three shifts of 36-career firefighters. We are part of the United Flagstaff Firefighters Local 1505.
