Funded by a National Science Foundation award to Dr. Dane Crossley, this is a 10-week summer research experience for undergraduates in the Developmental Integrative Biology Cluster in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. My research focuses on the development of cardiovascular control systems in embryonic American alligators, Common snapping turtles and their cousins, birds. Students will be trained in methodology needed to conduct physiological studies as well as methods needed to grasp the molecular basis for the physiology. Successful applicants will work in our laboratory alongside graduate and undergraduate students at the University of North Texas, and they will have the opportunity to learn microsurgical techniques, pharmacology of heart rate and blood pressure, protein gel electrophoresis and analysis, as well as other molecular biology techniques. As part of the preparation, each selected applicant will be assigned background material for understanding ongoing experiments, as well as participate in lab meetings and present research findings.
Participants will receive a $4,500 stipend, as well as funding for room and board and travel to and from UNT. Interested applicants must complete the Application, found on the site below:

Application review and notification will begin on May 15, 2011 and continue until all the positions are filled with qualified applicants. The program will run June 13th - August 19th, 2011. Participating undergraduates must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. High school graduates who have not yet enrolled in college and students who will have already received their bachelor's degrees are not eligible.
