Summer Regatta

As those of you who were able to be there will know, the Summer Regatta was a huge success. Superb organising my Anne Homa and the Regatta Committee, a veritable army of volunteers, great racing, excellent food prepared by Philippa Press and the catering team, and lovely weather meant the event ran almost seamlessly. Many visiting crews and clubs commented on how much they had enjoyed the event and how welcoming everyone one was. A huge thank you to everyone who helped.

Racing successes

The Club has continued to produce some outstanding results. At Henley Women’s Regatta Lu Edmunds, despite still being a junior, reached the final of the Rosie Maygothing Trophy for Senior Women Double Sculls with her partner Georgie Brayshaw from Leeds, losing to an excellent Bath University crew. The senior women’s eight also put in an excellent performance, qualifying for the Invesco Perpetual Challenge Cup. In a nailbiting first round, they just lost by 1/3 length to their arch rivals, Agecroft.

And the success continued. The self styled “Dad’s Army” men’s eight qualified for the Thames Challenge Cup, 24 years after three of them last qualified. There they met and defeated Thames RC “C” in the first round, winning by half a length cheered on by a YCRC contingent whose roars of “York” could be heard on the youtube video. Sadly they met Leander, one of the favourites, in the second round and were knocked out, but it was a fantastic achievement that staggered the commentating team.

Rowing Foundation Grant

The Rowing Foundation is a registered charity that seeks to support clubs getting young people involved in the sport of rowing. Charlie Widdowson and her mum Paula applied to the Rowing Foundation for a grant and were successful, matched funding from YCRC meaning that two junior boats can now be refurbished. Charlie wasn’t applying to get a boat for her own crew, she was looking to get two of the boats used by the youngest members of the club improved and our most sincere thanks to them both.

Rob Cree

As many of you will be aware, British Rowing has had its funding reduced and has had to reduce the number of staff it employs. Very sadly as a result, Rob Cree has now finished working for British Rowing, having been there for 12 years. Rob will still be a club member, rower and coach, and can now be contacted via his personal email address - . Rob, we wish you all the very best of luck for the future.

Junior and family BBQ

The junior squad and their families enjoyed a cracking BBQ last Sunday. Our very grateful thanks to MK Butchers on Bishopthorpe Road who kindly donated all of the burgers and sausages and to Freds Home Bakery for the bread. It’s the second year these two small, local businesses have supported the junior squad in this way, their generosity is very much appreciated.

And finally

Last but by no means least a very warm welcome to our new members.
