Summer Field Technicians in Wildlife Ecology

Threesummer undergraduate positions are available, to work on two research projects led by graduate students:

1) Marten use of burned forests (study areas near Williams Lake, BC and in northern Washington)

2) Songbird abundance and nest success in northern grasslands (near Clinton, BC)

Job Descriptions

Marten

The marten field technicians will conduct vegetation / habitat surveys in BC and Washington in locations that winter fieldwork showed were used (or not used) by marten. The BC study landscape was burned in 2010 and 2017, and has salvage logging in some of the 2010 burned areas. The WA landscape had a severe fire in 2006, but has not been logged. We anticipate these positions running from June 1 – end of August 2018, but we could potentially assign some work from mid-May forward.

Songbirds

The songbird technician will help conduct point counts, locate and monitor songbird nests, characterize habitats around nest sites, and sample insect prey. This project also entails locating raptor and owl pests and collecting regurgitated pellets to assess prey remains. The study site is a large arid grassland managed as an active cattle ranch. This position will start May 8-10 and run until the end of August, 2018.
