REGULATIONS REGARDING SELECTION CRITERIA FOR GUST SUMMER SCHOLARSHIP TO THE GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY (GW)

Each year, GUST offers its students a limited number of competitive summer scholarships to enrich their academic experience through international study. The summer scholarships are awarded by GUST to provide for tuition at USML (6 academic credit hours), a round trip ticket (economy class) to the United States, and a support allowance.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a full-timeGUST student
  • Have completed 60 credits
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0, or higher.
  • Hold a minimum TOEFL score of 550 (paper-based), 213 (computer-based), or 79-80 (internet-based).

The proceduresof the GUST Summer Scholarship

Applicants are required to submit the following documents to the International Programs Office (room W1-102) by February 16h,2017 (unless otherwise stated):

i)Completed application

ii)A personal interest essay

iii)Two letters of recommendation

iv)An official GUST transcript

v)A copy of a recent TOEFL score (valid for 2 years since date test was taken)

Selection Criteria

  • After review of the candidates’ application materials, the selection committee may request to schedule interviews with the candidates.
  • GUST graduates and alumni are not eligible for the GUST Summer Scholarship. Eligible candidates must have the intention to return to GUST as full-time enrolled students following their summer study at GW.

Rights and Liabilities

  • The GUST Summer Scholarship will cover the following expenses: US visa-processing fees, round-trip economy airfare (Kuwait-Washington D.C.-Kuwait) by the most direct route, GW tuition, books and fees for six credit hours, housing in Washington D.C. for the duration of study*, health insurance coverage, and a daily stipend of KD 10 for meals and transportation expenses.
  • Scholarship recipients who wish to travel prior to the start of classes or to prolong their stay may do so at their own expense. Furthermore, parents who wish to accompany a GUST scholarship recipient may do so at their own expense.
  • Upon return to Kuwait, scholarship recipients will submit a 2-3 page summary of their experience at GW. They must also agree to be available to discuss their experience with other GUST students, if so requested. Finally, they consent to the publication of the summary of their experiences, a photo and an appropriate quote(s) in institutional marketing materials, including brochures, newsletters, student publications, press releases in newspapers and magazines, and websites.

*GUST students will be provided accommodations in either the Foggy Bottom Campus or the Mount Vernon Campus. Depending on the number and gender of scholarship recipients, students will be placed in either one or two bedroom apartments. When possible, GUST students will share a two-bedroom apartment.
