Mr. McHughAdvanced Placement United States History (APUSH)

Summer Assignments for 7th & 8th Hour Classes

Students,

Welcome to APUSH! In order to give yourselves a good start in the course, read and complete the following assignments before the first day of class in August.

You will be given an assessment on these readings and terms, so read the assignments carefully, take notes on the readings, and complete and LEARN the terms. Whether you print the readings or read them electronically is up to you, but I urge you to print them so that you can take notes on the pages.

In addition to the readings, write and learn definitions/explanations for the terms attached before the first day of school.

You need to know some European history to have a good foundation in the first four units of the course, which is most of semester one. That is why I'm having you read about Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation, the Tudor and and Stuart dynasties of 1500s-1600s England, and the Enlightenment.

To simplify, here is a list of the things you need to do for APUSH before the first day of class in August:

1. Get a HARD COPY of the AMSCO Textbook, either the 2016 or 2015 edition

(official title of the book: United States History: Preparing for the Advanced Placement Examination, John J. Newman and John M. Schmalbach, editors; an AMSCO Publication)

2. Email me at this address: - tell me your name, your section (7th or 8th hour), anything else about yourself you think I should know, if you've purchased the textbook, and if there are any problems accessing the readings.

3. Read Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation https://www.hccfl.edu/media/173616/ee2luther.pdf

If clicking this link doesn't work, then just search 'Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation,' and this Hillsborough Community College link should be the first in the search list.

4. Read the Glorious Revolution article

5. Read the Enlightenment article from the Khan Academy website

6. Read the Enlightenment article about the American Enlightenment

http://www.iep.utm.edu/amer-enl/

7. Read the Enlightenment article that focuses on Roger Williams

8. Read chapter one of the textbook and write definitions/explanations to the list of terms below. These terms are from chapters one in the AMSCO textbook. Use the textbook and ANY outside sources, including electronic searches, to acquire this information. Share the work with classmates, but make sure YOU have LEARNED the terms.
