  6. Once a week, write a short email in Spanish to Sr. Saffels. This email can be about anything: what you did that week, something interesting you learned, the plot of your favorite movie, your favorite song in Spanish; it doesn’t matter!
  7. First email due before Friday, June 2. One per week after that until school starts. Approximately 40-60 words in length.

  11. Palabras Más Frecuentes (Most Frequent words) The top 500 (super-easy) words in Spanish. Know these inside & out!
  12. Frases Conversacionales (Conversational Phrases) Memorize these and look for random opportunities during the summer to shout them out in a normal conversation.
  13. Modismos Frecuentes (Frequent Idioms), y Frases Transicionales (Transition Phrases) Memorize these and be ready to make your essay pop!
  14. Complete the “Learn” section on Quizlet for each of these.
  15. Investigación Cultural
  • Begin your cultural research by taking notes on cultural phenomena in different Spanish-speaking countries. Choose 5 – 10 articles from my list (link on my school webpage) on topics that interest you. Have your notes ready to use on the first day of class.

Summer Spanish Scavenger Hunt

Complete as many as possible in order to compete for fabulous prizes during the first week of school!

 10 pts: Bring in a menu all in Spanish (No English!)

  • +5pts Bonus if it’s not from a Mexican restaurant

 10 pts: Selfie with a sign or billboard in Spanish.

 30-200 pts: Read a magazine (30), newspaper (50), or book in Spanish (up to 200). Bring it in and explain what it says.

  • Try: Mundo Hispánico (newspaper), People en Español (magazine), or try these book translations: Crepúsculo (Twilight); El león, la bruja y el armario (The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe); El diario de Greg (Diary of a Whimpy Kid)

 10 pts: Learn to tell a joke in Spanish.

 20 pts: Learn (and be able to sing) a song in Spanish

  • +5pts Bonus for song that you DIDN’T learn in Spanish class.

 100pts: Download Duolinguo App (or similar app) on your phone and complete all levels of Spanish!

 50 pts: Make friends with someone your age from a Spanish-speaking country on your favorite Social Media platform.

  • +50 pts: Have a chat conversation all in Spanish. Print it out to bring in.

 10 pts: Buy your Spanish dictionary. Minimum 80,000 words.

 25 pts: Find recording of a Spanish telenovela (soap opera) and watch it several times until you understand everything they are saying.

 50 pts: Make a video with some friends acting out a telenovela plot. Use only Spanish.

 25 pts: Record & watch a soccer game in Spanish.

 50 pts: Bring in the bulletin from a church service in Spanish that you attended.

 250 pts: Travel to a Spanish-speaking country (and bring me a souvenir!!! )

 30 pts: Explore a Hispanic grocery store. Make an Instagram story to document your adventures!

 10 pts: Drink a soft drink from a Spanish-speaking country and bring in the can/bottle. (Inca Cola, Jarritos, Mexican Coca-Cola)

 100 pts: Volunteer with a community ESL class, helping Spanish-speaking people learn English.

 25 pts: Read the news from a Spanish/Latin American news website and post it to the Facebook group.

 100 pts: Attend a film showing at the Atlanta Latin American Film Festival.

 25 pts: Plan your dream vacation to a Spanish-speaking country. Lay out an itinerary including all the major tourist attractions you will see, where you will stay, where you will eat, and how you will get around.
