Summer 2017 Farm to SchoolInternship Description
Position Overview:
The Livingston Farm to School Program (F2S), in partnership with Livingston School Districts #4&1, is looking for interns to help with its Farm to School program for 10-15hours/week during the summer of 2017.The Intern will report to the Farm to School Director. The goals of the internship are to provide experience in a school district with a strong Farm to School program; provide assistance with Farm to School program activities; and provide hands-on food, nutrition and farming education to students.
Program Overview:
The Livingston School District serves 150 lunches to schoolchildren per day during summer months. We aim to serve scratch-cooked, local, seasonal, fresh food whenever possible. We also engage students in the farm-to-table process and get students excited about trying new foods. Learn more at
Duration/Timing:
10-15hours per week from Junethrough September. Start date, hours and days of the week are flexible, but office hours are typically Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 4:00pm. Special events or meetings may occasionally fall on evenings or weekends.
Compensation:
Course credit or service learning hours only. This is an unpaid internship.
Responsibilities:
Assist with garden maintenance and vegetable production on school grounds; including 1,500 square feet of greenhouses and 1,045 square feet of outdoor vegetable gardens
Help with promotions and outreach,such as school/community events, Summer Lunch Program, LINKS for Learning enrichment activities, Harvest of the Month, Farm to School Month and Farm to School sales
Assist with preparation and rebuild of Lincoln School Community Garden Renovation Phase I
Help with 5th annual Farm to School Summer 4 Mile Run
Assist with promotional and educational materials.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Interest inschoolfood, nutrition, child health, local food, agriculture, youth engagement, etc.
Comfortable working with and engaging large groups of elementary-aged children
Experience with gardening, aquaponics and/or farming
Some experience withsafe food preparation, handling and servingpreferred
Can commit to the full duration of the internship
Excellent, professional written and oral communication skills
Comfortable juggling a variety of tasks –organized, and self-motivated
Energetic, enthusiastic, and engaging
Having a car is not required, but very helpful
Able to pass a criminal background check
