SUMMARY OF REQUIREMENTS

The following is a brief summary of the new and revised paragraphs in the Standard for Supplementary Protectors For Use In Electrical Equipment, UL 1077, which have a future Effective Date of July 14, 2008 and the action that may be required to determine compliance.

TOPIC - Clarification of the Trip-Free Features of Supplementary Protectors

Paragraphs / General Subject and Comment /
2.11.1 / Requires a protector designated as “Trip Free” to be designed so that its contacts cannot be held in the closed position by the operating means during trip command conditions.
2.11.2 / Requires a protector designated as “Trip Free, Cycling” to be designed so that the contacts cannot be held in the closed position by the operating means during trip command conditions, but will reclose if the closing command is maintained. The protector will continue to close momentarily and repeatedly as long as the close command is maintained by the operating means during trip command conditions.
15.4 / Refers to the two types of trip-free operation as defined in paragraphs 2.11.1 and 2.11.2. Refers also to paragraph 19.11 for the test to identify the type of tripping employed by the protector.
19.11 / Requires a protector to be subjected to the test described in paragraph 19.10, except the closing command shall be maintained through the actuator for a period of time equal to at least five minutes. Reclosing of the protector during this time shall identify it as cycling trip-free. If it does not reclose, it shall be identified as trip-free.

The new and revised requirements will impact ALL Recognized supplementary protectors.

Description of Action Required by Manufacturers:

1.  Manufacturers of Recognized supplementary protectors intending to continue Recognition of these products after the effective date, will be required to evaluate and identify the type of tripping employed by each supplementary protector. Manufacturers are requested to provide data demonstrating compliance with these requirements to Underwriters Laboratories. The data should allow for the identification of the type of tripping employed by each supplementary protector.

The test described in paragraph 19.11 need only be conducted on one sample of a family of protectors to establish the type of tripping for the entire family. A family of protectors will be considered to employ the same type of tripping based on similarity of construction and operation. Underwriters Laboratories will conduct spot checks of the data submitted by manufacturers to verify accuracy and revise the manufacturer’s Recognition Reports to identify the type of tripping employed by each supplementary protector.
