SUMMARY OF REQUIREMENTS

The following is a brief summary of the new paragraphs in the Standard for Standard For Audio/Video And Musical Instrument Apparatus For Household, Commercial, And Similar General Use, UL 6500, which have a future Effective Date of May 9, 2014 and the action that may be required to determine compliance.

T.2.7.14 / Definition of Coin/Button Cell Battery as a single cell battery having a diameter greater than its height. Apparatus – including remote controls – containing coin/button lithium batteries with a diameter of 32 mm or less and designed to be user replaceable through an accessible battery access cover are under the scope of (new) Annex T.
T.2.7.14 (5.4.1 e) / One of two graphical symbols shall be provided close to the battery compartment.
T.2.7.14 (5.4.1 e) / A warning in the accompanying documentation according to this subclause is required.
T.21.1 / The door/cover providing user access to coin/button cell batteries requires either a tool to open or a minimum of two independent and simultaneous movements of the securing mechanism to open by hand.
T.21.1 / If used, screws and similar fasteners shall be captive unless, for larger equipment, the panel/door is required for proper functioning of the apparatus and these fasteners are not likely to be discarded or left off the apparatus.
T.21.2 / Pre-conditioning of the sample prior to mechanical testing is required. Preconditioning consists of mold stress relief and open/close cycling of the battery compartment door/cover.
T.21.3 / The following tests are performed on the same sample subjected to pre-conditioning: Drop, Impact and Crush (for remote controls).
T.21.4 / Compliance is checked by application of a force to the battery compartment door/cover. The battery compartment door/cover shall not open and remain functional, in addition, the battery shall not have become accessible.
Description of Requested Actions by Manufacturers:
Apparatus containing lithium chemistry coin/button cell batteries…..
1. Manufacturers of Listed and Recognized apparatus (including remote controls) employing lithium chemistry coin/button cell batteries under the scope of Annex T and intending to continue Listing or Recognition are requested to identify such apparatus by File, Volume, Section, and Report Date. In addition, a description of proposed marking and construction modifications shall be provided.
2. Manufacturers of Listed and Recognized apparatus (including remote controls) that do not contain any lithium chemistry coin/button cell batteries are requested to respond with a statement indicating that there is no impact on existing Certifications.
The cooperation from all manufacturers is appreciated as providing the requested information will greatly increase the efficiency of this Review.
