SUMMARY OF POSITION

The purpose of the Human Resources Department is to develop and administer Firm policies relating to employees and employee welfare. The major activities involved in the Human Resources Department include the selection and placement of new employees, administering wage, salary and employee benefit plans, coordinating personal development and training, planning for future personnel needs assuring compliance with governmental employment laws. The Human Resources Department serves three offices, located in Madison, Milwaukee and Rockford, Illinois with over 400 employees.

The primary responsibility of the Human Resources Director is to plan, organize and direct all aspects of the human resources functions of the firm in employment, compensation, employee relations and training. Another primary aspect of this position is to provide human resources consulting services for the firm’s clients.

To perform these duties requires a degree of judgment, discretion and knowledge of Firm/organization, policy and personnel, enabling him/her to work independently. The position holder is highly visible both inside and outside the organization and must represent both the Human Resources Department and Firm well. S/he has access to highly confidential personnel information.

S/he reports to the Firm Administrator along with the Word Processing Supervisor, Data Processing Supervisor, Administrative Assistant Supervisor and Controller. The Human Resources Associate and Human Resources Assistant reports to this position.

REPRESENTATIVE MAJOR ACTIVITIES

  1. Formulate, develop and implement firm personnel policies and procedures to improve communication, consistency and legal protection.
  1. Manage and supervise the human resources staff to assure that the administration of the benefits and employee relations programs are consistent with goals and objectives of the firm, as well as federal, state, and local guidelines.
  1. Facilitate the process for which performance appraisals are administered, providing management with direction and guidance in the writing and delivery of job evaluations.
  1. Research, recommend and administer annual salary increase program for merit/performance, promotion and market rate adjustments.
  1. Work with management to assure that disciplinary procedures are followed, guaranteeing fair and consistent handling of employee conflicts in order to reduce firm liability and maintain employee morale.
  1. Provide human resource consulting services to clients in the areas of policy and procedures, benefit and compensation, employee relations, and recruiting.
  1. Participate in professional development activities to keep current with employment law changes and requirements.
  1. Work with the Firm Administrator, Human Resources Associate and Human Resources Assistant.

KNOWLEDGE ABILITY/SKILLS REQUIRED

Knowledge of personnel practices and theories to direct the operations of a human resources department and formulate goals and objectives consistent with federal, state, and local guidelines. Knowledge of management principles and theories. Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with employees and the public. Skill in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion, and decision-making to achieve organizational objectives. Skill in evaluating organizational operations as they relate to policies, goals and objectives, costs, and staffing levels. Ability to create a firm atmosphere which encourages motivation, innovation, and high performance. Ability to manage and delegate responsibility and authority to staff.
