Subtraction

Time:

1 day- 50 minutes

What do the students already know?

Students already know how to represent subtraction with objects, fingers, mental images and drawings

Objective:

Solve subtraction word problems

Materials:

·  “Linus the Minus” poster

·  Harry K YouTube video “Subtract with a Pirate”

·  Subtraction Worksheets

·  Unifix cubes

·  iPod for Splash Math app

Procedure:

First, we will review the “Linus the Minus” poster to remind students that subtraction means to take away. We will then watch the “Subtract with a Pirate” video for further review. I will then pass out subtraction worksheets that we will work together as a class and use our unifix cubes to solve the problems. Once we have completed this, I will let students work independently on subtraction using their iPod’s on Splash Math.

Assessment:

I will let the students work independently on Splash Math and set the app up to work on subtraction. I will monitor their progress and see how well they understand subtraction with the real-time progress dashboard on the app.
