Nominee's Personal Profile
Sarah Hock is a committed animal welfare and non-profit professional. Sarah, an animal lover from an early age, had many pets growing up in the rural Arizona community of Strawberry. She began her formal career path in 2004 as a volunteer with the Arizona Animal Welfare League and SPCA (AAWL) in Phoenix. At AAWL she worked her way up to manage the education department. This involved interfacing with children and teens enrolled in the educational programs as well as with media highlighting animal welfare and pet education programs. Sarah was thrilled to build upon her experiences serving animals (and people) when she discovered the graduate programs offered by the ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation.
Coupled with her employment experience in a nonprofit animal welfare agency, she augmented her career path with the Master of Non-profit Studies program. The program’s targeted curriculum, accessible staff, and friendly cohort made ASU an ideal place to learn leadership, financial, and resource management principles. Upon graduation, Sarah was thrilled to secure a position as the Executive Director with the Humane Society of Central Arizona (HSCAZ) in Payson, Arizona which serves Gila County and Rim Country.
Sarah took the helm during a pivotal time in the organization’s history: the successful conclusion of a capital campaign to finance demolition of the old buildings and construction of and transition to new, state-of-the-art facility serving Gila County communities. Under Sarah’s leadership since 2010, HSCAZ moved from a 45% to an 89% live release rate of dogs and cats. HSCAZ has expanded the low cost spay and neuter program for over 600 animals annually and even started a Mobile Spay and Neuter Clinic. Sarah fosters a positive work environment and culture at HSCAZ, while taking a mission-driven approach to improving the lives of animals and meeting the community’s need to ensure animals are cared for. She is most proud of the forward-thinking local donors, committed leadership from the HSCAZ Board of Directors, and the spirit of service and creativity that her staff and volunteers demonstrate daily.
