“A STUDY ON NITYA SHIRO ABHYANGAWITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO HEALTH OF HAIR”

6. BRIEF RESUME OF INTENDED WORK:-

6.1. NEED FOR THE STUDY:

Ayurveda includes oil massage as one among the daily regimen1 and therapeutic procedure.2Regular application of oil on head, ears and soles are emphasized by Ayurvedic treatises.3Regular application of oil will delay the process of senility. It reduces fatigue, bestows good vision, nurtures thebody, prolongs life spanand induces sound sleep, make the skin healthy and the body strong.1

The mode of Abhyanga can be grossly divided into two ie, application over head and over the body. The indication of Abhyanga whether local or general, it depends on the clinical condition and the site of disease.4It is especially effective when it is applied over head. Charaka mentioned that regular application of oil on head will alleviate diseases of the head.It imparts softness, length, thickness, unction and black color to hair. Provides relishfeeling to head and good facial skin. It nourishes all the sense organs. In general oil massage prevents excess increase of Vata, nourishes body tissues, and imparts complexion, color and strength to skin.5SusrutaSamhita has described the nature of oil to be used on head. The oil should always be in cool state for the purpose of application on head.10This advice should be understood in relation to the case of healthy individuals, as application of lukewarm unctuous substance is indicated in various diseased conditions. The application of oil over the head bestows brightness to scalp hair and clarifies the filth and lice on the head.6In Charucharyait is explainedthat application of oil over soles will cure the disease of eyes, instillation of oil to eyes removes the diseases of ears, instillation of oil in ears cures the diseases of head and application of oil to head cures the disease afflicting the whole body.7

It is clear from the textual references that Abhyanga helps man to prevent the common health hazards of both physique, psyche and specially hair. It will helps to lead a healthy life. If total body Abhyanga is not possible daily, at least a person may do Abhyanga on Shirah, Sravana and Paada. This will provide a minimum guarantee of our general health.

Research in other bio-medical science showed that the regular application of coconut oil over scalp and skin will helps in increasing hair growth, complexion and also avoids premature aging.Daily scalp massage prevents head ache, baldness, graying of hair and hair fall.14

Now a day’s people are not following this daily regimen as such ShiroAbhyanga. Such an irregular lifestyle leads to many life style disorders. On this point of view, this study aims at analyzing the effect of Nitya-Shiro-Abhyanga(simple oil application)on scalp hair, through asurvey study in orderto validate the statement “ShiraSravanaPadeshuThamViseshenaSeelayet”.

6.2. REVIEW OF LITERATURE

Abhyanga is one of the procedure to be practiced routinely in the system of once living.1 It is the most commonly indicated and extensively applied treatment procedure amongst the Bahirparimarjana Chikitsa.2Application of oil on entire body will remove the deranged Dosha from cervix (Yonimukha), head (Shira), anus (Guda), upper limbs (Baahu), thigh (Uuru), chest (Vaksha), pelvic region (Katee), nose (Nasa) etc. and the whole body(Sarvanga). Abhyanga removes the diseases of skin; Kushta, Pama, Mandala, Dadru, Charmamukha etc. application of oil over soles will cure the disease of eyes, instillation of oil to eyes removes the diseases of ears, instillation of oil in ears cures the diseases of head and application of oil to head cures the disease afflicting the whole body.7

Head is one among the ten abodes of Prana. In addition to this, head constitute one of the three most important vital areas (Tri-Marma)8. Learned scholars have given similly the human body to the tree. As root is main part of plant, similarly head in human body.9

Marmas or life centers can be considered as vital points in the body where the subtle energy of Prana is converted, regulated and stored for use by the gross body and mind.10In total there are 107 Marmas throughout the body11 and 19 from these are classified as SadyapranaharaMarmas or Vital life centers. From the 19 vital life centres7 are located in the head region alone.12This shows how very critical and vital the head region is in relation to the whole of our physio-psychological functioning.

Regular application of oil on head will prevent from headache, baldness, graying of hair, hair fall. The strength of head and forehead is specially enhanced. The hair will be black, long and deep rooted. Sense organs work properly. The skin of face will be brightened. Daily application of oil on head will produce sound sleep and happiness.5

Application of oil on scalp is of four types, they are smearing, irrigation, pad and retention. Each one in the successive order is more and more effective.2 It should be particularly practiced on Head, Ears and Soles.3 The indication of Abhyanga whether it is local or general, it should be done after considering the condition of the Dosha’s and Mala’s .It mitigates the aggravation of the Dosha’s and bestows softness.4The processing of Chakra Taila is described by Charaka which is advised to be applied over the head regularly. The oil should always be cool state for the purpose of application over the head.6Anointing the head with oil cures the diseases of the head , makes the hairs soft, lengthy, abundant, unctuous , and black; bestows feeling of comfort to the head, good skin of the face, nourishes the sense organs well, and gives a feeling of contentment in the head.6

Time of administration- After cutting the nail and unwanted hairs from the body, before commencing a bath, when the person starts to have a desire for food and drinks, do the oil massage.13

Benefits -Oil massage mitigates Vata, provides sound sleep, nourishment and strength. Cures all the bad effects of burns, fractures, trauma, pain, lethargy, exertion and premature ageing.13

Characters of oil - The oil should suit for the season, mitigates Vata and should have properties like pleasant smell and touch.13
