Subject: Spanish 2 Grade level: 9-10

Spanish 2

------

Essential understanding: Many linguists believe that the first spoken words of humans were nouns. The power of a noun is rooted in the fact that, in various cultures, language is used to identify and give meaning to that which we name. The names of people, places and things are reflections of values and the organization of cultures. Because of the diversity among Spanish speaking countries, the name of a fruit, for example, may vary from region to region. Furthermore, a noun is an important part of speech with a special relationship to articles and adjectives.

“Write with nouns and verbs, not adjectives and adverbs. The adjective hasn’t been built that can pull a weak or inaccurate noun out of a tight place— William Strunk Jr., E.B White

Overview: This month you will learn/review that nouns are called “sustantivos.” You will practice categorizing nouns, including by gender (Remember, in Spanish all nouns are assigned a gender and the article preceding it is also gender based) This month you will play around with sentence structure using nouns and verbs as your focus.

Guiding question 1: What is the relationship of a noun to other parts of speech and Spanish speaking cultures?
