Freshman A hold for win over LaPorte, 30-28
The Clear Lake Freshman A pulled out a 30-28 win Wednesday night over the LaPorte Bulldogs. Clear Lake jumped out to an early first quarter lead with a four yard touchdown run by halfback Clayton Brown. Devin Teaff followed with a two point conversion run to make the lead 8-0 in favor of the Falcons. LaPorte scored at 9:55 of the second quarter on a run from five yards out. The two point attempt was good tieing the score at 8-8. Edgar Gonzalez of the Falcons scored from the one yard line at 5:38 in the second quarter. The two point conversion run by Chris Nevarez was good giving the Falcons a 16-8 lead. The Bulldogs followed this with a 28 yard touchdown pass off of a halfback option. The pass on the two point conversion was good knotting the score at 16-16. After the ensuing kickoff, Clear Lake’s Edgar Gonzalez scored on a 65 yard run around the left side of the Falcon offensive line. Gonzalez’s two point conversion run was successful giving the Falcons a 24-16 halftime lead.
Clear Lake started from within their 40 yard line to begin the second half. Devin Teaff scampered over the left side for a 56 yard touchdown on the second play from scrimmage. The two point conversion failed, making the lead was 30-16 at this point. The defense was unable to hold LaPorte on the next drive as the Bulldogs scored on a 42 yard pass at 3:01 of the third quarter. The Bulldogs closed the gap further at 6:00 of the fourth quarter on a touchdown from the two yard line. The two point conversion attempt was stopped short of the goal line by the Falcon defense. Clear Lake’s offense was unsuccessful in sustaining a drive on their next series to control the clock and punted to the Bulldogs. With LaPorte driving late in the game, Chris Nevarez broke through on a blitz and sacked the LaPorte quarterback for a 15 yard loss. This play broke the Bulldog’s back and Clear Lake held on for the victory as time ran out.
