SUBJECT:ED Staff Nurse - Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Registered Nurse (RN) renders professional care to patients within the Emergency department in addition to other patient care units of the Hospital as needed, in support of medical care as directed by the Nurse Manager and pursuant to the guidelines of the Registered Nurse Practice Act and the policies and procedures of the Hospital.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Utilizes the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation
  • Demonstrates knowledge, technical skills and compliance with Hospital policy and procedure in provision of patient's needs, treatments and health education
  • Responsible for performing within the rules and regulations of the Idaho State Board of Nursing
  • Accomplishes documentation of patient care within the guidelines of policy and procedure with the goal of maintaining quality care
  • Provides safe and comprehensive nursing care according to state regulations, Hospital policy and procedure and DNV standards
  • Establish care priorities based on patient problems; communicate with staff and new employees of patient problems/concerns/changes in condition. Notify physician promptly regarding concerns
  • Maintains mental and physical health, sufficient to meet the demand of the Emergency Department (ED)
  • Triages and performs initial examinations for emergency medical conditions for patients entering the ED and determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs, as well as factors influencing patient flow
  • Initiates accurate and on-going assessment of physical and psychological problems of patients
  • Analyzes assessment data to formulate a nursing plan of care
  • Provides care based on a reverence for life and a respect for the inherent dignity, worth, autonomy and individuality of each human being
  • Recognizes and values research as a method to further emergency nursing practice
  • Assists the patient and significant others to obtain knowledge about illness and injury prevention and treatment
  • Recognizes and assists in meeting learning needs to maximize professional development.
  • Engages in a variety of activities and behaviors, which characterize professionals
  • Effectively communicates with team members, the public and the community
  • Effectively functions as a team member to ensure readiness of equipment and supplies in the department
  • Floats and assists in other nursing departments, as directed by Nurse Manageror Hospital Supervisor

The operational needs of departments and safety of patients may require that employees beavailable to work all shifts,weekends and holidays and in any department to meet the needs of the patients.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

  • Skills:

Ability to read, write legibly, and comprehend the written and spoken word in English

Basic computer literacy and ability to effectively learn new software programs required

Keyboarding, thirty (30) wpm, interest in computer input

The ED Staff RN must demonstrate an understanding of cardiac rhythms, and mustdemonstrate rhythm analysis skills

Must demonstrate an understanding of trauma care

Must demonstrate critical thinking skills

The ED Staff RN requires an ED knowledge base

  • Education: Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program
  • Experience:

Minimum of one (1) year RN experience preferred

Recent Emergency/Critical Care nursing experience recommended

  • License/Certifications:

Current State of Idaho RN license

Current CPR certification required

ACLS, TNCC, ENPC/PALS, and NRP (preferred or must be obtained within six (6) months from date of hire).TNCC renewal may be substituted by four (4) hours of continuing trauma education per year that is approved by the ED Nurse Manager.

DMAB (preferred or must be obtained within six (6) months from date of hire)

Procedural Sedation (preferred or must be obtained within six (6) months from date of hire)

CEN recommended

  • Supervisory: None
  • Supervised by: ED Nurse Manager; in absence of the ED Nurse Manager, supervised by the Hospital Supervisor

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Job allows employee to vary physical position or activity for comfort
