Course justification:

The MS Business Education (Post Secondary) program is designed to prepare students to teach in the Wisconsin Technical College (WTC) System. The program incorporates the seven certification courses required for teaching in the WTC System. Students enrolled in the Spring 2011 ITBE 750 Improvement of Instruction in Business Education, the Teaching Methods (WTC certification No. 52) course, requested an opportunity for hands-on teaching experience at a technical college. Although some students in this MS program already have teaching in either K-12 or post-secondary classroom, some students have no teaching experience. This new course is designed to meet this request and provide teaching experience for students who do not have it. Therefore, the new course will be an elective course in the program.

Relationship to program assessment objectives:

The mission and main purpose of the MS Business Education (Post Secondary) program is to prepare students to teaching the Wisconsin Technical College System. This course will better prepare those students who do not already have teaching experience.

Budgetary impact:

This course will be taken by a limited number of students. When the one-credit course cannot be part of the instructor’s teaching load, it will be handled as an overload. Mileage will be needed for faculty to observe each student at least one time.

Course Description:

This course is designed to provide hands-on teaching experience in a post-secondary education environment. The experience will provide the student with an opportunity to gain experience and apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom. Prerequisite: EDFOUND 625 and either (ITBE 750 or ITBE 762)

Course Objectives:

  • Students will gain experience in a post-secondary classroom.
  • Students apply knowledge learned in the classroom
  • Students will observe and assist an experienced post-secondary instructor
  • Students will teach a portion of a post-secondary course with feedback from an experienced instructor
  • Students will complete a reflective portfolio based on their experience

Class Requirements:

  1. Work with your university supervisor to locate a qualified post-secondary educator in your field of study.
  2. Make arrangements to participate (observation, teaching assistance, and actual teaching) for at least 30 hours in at least one face-to-face course in the instructor’s schedule for one session (Fall, Spring or Summer).
  3. Begin your experience by observing the post-secondary teacher. Complete an observation form for at least two observed class sessions.
  4. Gradually increase your participation by assisting the post-secondary teacher. This could include team teaching, lab assistance, or other appropriate activities.
  5. Prepare and teach at least 6 hours of the class on your own, with assistance from the classroom instructor. This experience will vary depending on the post-secondary teacher’s preferences or the class content. It may be done in shorter segments or for entire class periods. The classroom instructor will complete an observation/evaluation form for at least one class session that you teach. Your university supervisor will complete an observation/evaluation form for at least one additional class session.
  6. Write and submit a weekly reflective paper on your classroom experiences.
  7. At the end of the class session, prepare a portfolio summarizing your internship experience. This portfolio will include:
  8. Your weekly reflective papers.
  9. Signed documentation of the hours that you have spent in the classroom.
  10. A final reflection paper outlining on how you have progressed in the following areas: (1) course development, (2) teaching effectiveness, (3) differentiation of instruction and (4) evaluation/assessment of student progress.
  11. At least four artifacts demonstrating your skills in the four areas listed above.
  12. A statement of your personal philosophy of post-secondary teaching.
  13. One graduate credit equals 45 hours. Therefore, approximately 15 hours are expected for reflection, class preparation, and portfolio development.
