Available from August 2017, one post for a period of 12 months. Applicants must currently be in a Type I training post and hold a National/Visiting Training number. Applicants from out with the West of Scotland must have the agreement of their Postgraduate Dean to retain their original training number and to return to their original deanery at the end of the year of training.

The post is suitable for existing ST and SpR trainees in Emergency Medicine to gain sub-speciality training in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.

The post would involve 6 months in the Paediatric Emergency Department, 3 months in Paediatric Critical Care and 3 months in Paediatric Medicine.

The Paediatric Emergency department is one of the largest in the United Kingdom and provides excellent experience in all aspects of childhood emergencies. Description

1 year’s additional training to sub-specialise in paediatric emergency medicine will include 6 months working in the paediatric emergency department, 3 months paediatric critical care and 3 months paediatric medicine.

In June 2015 the Emergency Department at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children, Yorkhillrelocated to the new Royal Hospital for Children on Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital site. The new departmentsees approximately 60,000 new patients each year with an age range from birth to sixteenth birthday. The department runs a review clinic twice a week for patients with minor injuries which trainees are encouraged to attend.

The department serves the children of the city of Glasgow and the hospital is the tertiary referral centre for the West of Scotland. On the same site is a co-located maternity hospital with Level 4 NICU and the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. There is rapid access to laboratory and advanced radiology facilities.

There are currently seventeen junior members of staff from a mixture of paediatrics, emergency medicine and general practice and they work a full shift system.The successful applicant would spend their time working across the department in the majors area, minor illness and injury stream and the resuscitation room.

The trainees are supported by 10 consultants with a mix of paediatric and emergency medicine backgrounds. The consultants provide shop floor cover for 15 hours a day between Monday and Friday and 16 hours on weekend days. Further support is provided by a dedicated team of nurse practitioners. There are weekly multidisciplinary departmental meetings that include implementation of guidelines and clinical governance.

There are excellent teaching opportunities within the department. Each week the junior staff have 2 hours of protected teaching time on a Wednesday afternoon. The middle grade staff have an additional hour of teaching every Thursday lunchtime. This involves joint radiology meetings, morbidity and mortality meetings, clinical and management sessions in rotation. In addition paediatrics has weekly grand rounds and monthly hospital academic meetings.

The Critical Care department manages 16 intensive care and satellite high dependency care beds throughout the hospital. The specialist and general intensive care provided reflects the comprehensive tertiary medical and surgical specialities and the major emergency and acute receiving services provided by the hospital. The unit supports paediatric cardiac surgery, invasive cardiology and ECMO services. A transport and retrieval service supports critically ill and injured patients presenting to other hospitals throughout Scotland. The critical care department have weekly teaching sessions for junior staff and a robust induction programme.

The paediatric medical department encompasses general and speciality paediatric services for children in Glasgow and the West of Scotland. There will be opportunities to see a variety of paediatric medical patients in the acute and clinic settings. There are weekly medical grand rounds and monthly hospital CME meetings.
