STUDY ABROAD CELLPHONE POLICY

Wentworth Institute of Technology holds the safety and security of our students as our highest priority, both on and off campus. As such, Wentworth requires all students participating in studying abroad programs to be available by telephone for the duration of their stay and while on study-related and/or independent travel. Students are required to keep their cellphones with them at all times and respond to calls, if not immediately, in a timely manner. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in disciplinary action including, but not limited to, termination of the study abroad semester.

DETAILS OF THIS REQUIRED POLICY

Each student is required to have an operational cell phone that has been activated to work in their destination country and in any location the student travels. Student are required to maintain this cell phone throughout the duration of Study Abroad. There are two possible plans for student cell phone:

1. Students may bring their personal cellphone for use in Europe. This is the preferred option. If the phone is not blocked, students maybring a SIM Card that works in Europe or purchase a SIM Card in Europe, assuring that the cell phones is working throughout their time and travel in Europe. The costs for the SIM Cards are paid by the student.

If the phone is blocked or still under contract, then students may enable the cell phone to function internationally, although they are strongly advised to take careful note of restrictions and costs with the phone carrier. Most plans allow the phone to be enabled for a low fee (for emergency use), although high fees may be incurred in pay-per-use.

2. Students who do not bring a cell phone to Europe have the option buy a pre-paid one in Europe. Several carriers, such as T-Mobile or Vodafone, offer low-cost, pay-per-use plans for use within Europe. The costs for the SIM cards and the costs for phone are paid by the students.
