Policy Statement on Art Supplies

All art courses at Northern have a school budget for basic art supplies. All art students are provided with the necessary art supplies needed for general creation of art projects. A sample of items includes paper, pencils, erasers, paint, brushes, glue scissors, colour pencils, oil pastels, plus many more. Art students have full access to all facilities, equipment and supplies as needed to create art. Occasionally art projects take on a greater cost than provided for in the school budget. Greater costs come about from projects of a unique nature, or from using better quality tools or surfaces that may be more expensive but also more durable, long lasting or better suited to student portfolio presentations e.g., illustration board.

Some fortunate students prefer to bring in their own art tools and surfaces so that they can control the quality of materials necessary to a project. Note:Any student in financial need will be provided with all the necessary materials to produce quality artwork. Students should privately speak to their instructors.All Visual Arts courses (codes:-AVI1O1, AVI2O1, AVI3M1. AVI4M1) at Northern have full provisions forart student needs. However there are a few small items that all art students should provide due to the school/homeworknature of art projects.

All art students should have a basic set of art supplies for home and school use. Many families already have these, or a facsimile, in their home which will avoid extra costs. Obviously the supplies can be used for many school and home projects. The basic Art Kit should have the following:-

  • Sketch Book - inexpensive and versatile (from $2.00 to $10.00),
  • Pencils - a variety of grades (at least two of each of HB, 2B, 4B, 2H)
  • Colour pencils - a good set of a minimum of 8 to 36 pencils – recommend, Berol Prismacolour (cost from min. of $2.00 to $20.00)
  • Eraser
  • Pencil Sharpener (small hand held)
  • Glue Stick
  • Markers
  • Watercolours – a good inexpensive set of a min. of 8 transparent colours – recommend, PrangWatercolour set (cost from min. of $4.00)
  • Brushes - versatile watercolour brushes - small (for detail), medium and large, recommend, #3, 6 and 8

Art Focus or Studio Courses at Northern

The Art Focus, or Studio Courses, at Northern are grade 10, 11 and 12 courses in the six following specialized art areas; Life Drawing, Drawing and Painting, Material Arts, Ceramics, Design, and Illustration. In addition to the basic Art Kit and the art supplies, equipment and facilities provided to all art students, Art Focus, or Studio Art Courses, may have an Art Fee, or a need for additional purchasing of specialized art supplies. Material fees vary for each course and are listed on each course description. Course descriptions, profiles and material lists are available from the course instructor during the first week of classes.

Studio Art Fee- Students who are enrolled in certain studio art courses are charged this fee to help cover the costs of bulk supplies and materials that will be used in the making of their personal works of art.
