How would I use supporting details to support the analysis of the central idea/theme? / Standards:
Students will know:Students will be able to identify central idea/theme, writing conventions, vocabulary skills, how to identify and build relationships between ideas and themes/central ideas within text. / Students will do:Students will be able to respond to text using strong writing conventions, distinguish unknown/ambiguous vocabulary, find central idea within text, and find details t support theme.
Lesson Essential Question: After determining the central ideas/themes in a text, how can I analyze the author’s development of the central ideas/themes through supporting ideas or story elements over the course of the texts?
Activating Strategy:Give and overview of the book. Discuss themes and possible themes for the book. Create graphic organizers to help with students’ comprehension of the book. Character list, vocabulary list, lit circle packet.
Key vocabulary to preview and vocabulary strategy:Science Fiction, Protagonist, antagonist, universal, theme, figurative language, central idea/message, story elements, literary devices, author’s development, convey, various words from text.
Lesson Instruction
Learning Activity 1: Complete “Questioning the Text” on page 109 and page 110 “Before Reading” section in Springboard. Go over in pairs, groups, then whole class.
Assessment Prompt for LA 1: Teacher assesses oral answers.
Differentiation: modeling, positive peer pairing / Graphic Organizer:
Character list with the main characters and brief descriptions as well as the character’s perspective. Leave room to add as book continues. Questions list to write any questions about confusing passages in novel. Vocabulary list that continues throughout book. T-Chart with two varying perspectives. T-Chart giving similarities and differences between novel and “Harrison Bergeron” with pages numbers and exact quotes to support this.
Learning Activity 2:Students will look at the conflict and differing perspectives in the novel (Fahrenheit 451).
Assessment Prompt for LA 2:Go over “During Reading” section in Springboard on pages 112-113 questions 3-7.
Differentiation: Teacher led center
Assignment:
  1. Students will complete the “Lit Circle” packet based on the novel.
  2. Vocabulary list.
  3. Word parts game.
  4. Achieve 3000.

  6. Pages 112-113 in textbook.

Students will write a paragraph telling what the central idea/theme is and state supporting details to prove the theme.
