Sam’s Plane
Sam had never come first in anything. He had never won a race, he had never won a raffle and he had never come first in a test. He wasn’t even the first born in his family. He had a big sister, Julie.
Henry was his best friend. He always came first in the races because he was a very fast runner. Julie was a very good speller, so she always came first in the spelling competitions.
Last Tuesday Sam was busy doing his reading activity when he heard Mrs Radburn say, “This afternoon we are going to have a paper plane throwing competition.” Sam sat up and listened. “Everyone will make a paper plane and we’ll go to the oval to see whose plane will fly the best.”
Sam got very excited. He was good at making paper planes. “I can win this,” he thought to himself.
After lunch Mrs Radburn handed out pieces of paper. Sam quickly started to make his plane. He made sure that he folded each part crisply so that the pieces fitted well with each other. His plane was sleek and firm. He wrote his name clearly on the wing so that he won’t lose it.
Everyone had to line up at the marker, ready to throw their plane. “Ready, set, go!” announced Mrs Radburn. Suddenly 24 paper planes were flying through the air. A few of them crashed immediately, but Sam’s plane kept flying. Two other planes crashed into each other and tumbled to the ground. But Sam’s plane kept flying. One by one the planes landed…except Sam’s. His plane soared high and straight. It flew past the goal posts, over the edge of the oval and landed next to the classroom. Sam had finally come first.
