Minutes

1.  The minutes from November 20 were reviewed and approved with the following corrections: The Upward Bound high school program ends Dec 15. Under OSS, the WorkSource Center is working with OSS to develop mentoring programs with businesses in the community. A representative from the Dept of Rehabilitation is in OSS weekly.

2.  Your Items: CDC-Santa will arrive on 12/13 bearing gifts from the Orfala Foundation (the Foundation from which we were awarded a grant for the new CDC). UB-A financial aid workshop for high school students and parents will be held on 1/26/08. ASO-Their presentation to the Academic Senate regarding the development of a textbook rental program yielded 4-5 faculty reps to the taskforce. On 12/13, the ASO will sponsor a social event-break from studying-food and games will be provided in the ASO office. On 12/13 at 5:00p, on the quad, Club CARE (a club chartered by the CARE program) will have a tree lighting ceremony as a fundraiser. ASO is working with college reps to create a recycling program at LACC. A&R-The application period for June 2008 graduation has closed. The process for December 2008 will begin in February. Enrollment for winter and spring 2008 is progressing. Comparisons are not real, since our dates of registration vary from 2007 to 2008; however, winter is up 170% (section count up 27%) and spring is down 13%. A special one-day one-stop registration will be held on January 23, F&SC, 8:30a-7p. OSS-Accommodated testing is busy as finals approach. The new ACCESS drop off is moving to the parking area by the sheriff’s office, right off Heliotrope at the north end of the Admin Bldg. Health Ctr-Reps did a presentation for the Academic Senate; a monthly series of presentations is being scheduled for the college on such topics as, “ask the doctor.” TRIO/SSS-Students have been getting assistance with applications in preparation for transfer. The program is connecting with EOP programs at 4-year institutions. Financial Aid-FAFSA on the web worksheets are available (no paper documents will be accepted for 2008-09). On 2/23, free assistance with E-Z tax returns will be available. GEAR-UP 9th graders will come to campus in the spring to see a theater production. The new scholarship brochure is being finalized. Matriculation-The Curriculum Committee is addressing the pre-requisite component. Erica Johnson will be updating/correcting/inputting. Other parts of the detailed process will be addressed at a meeting scheduled this week. Harbor has worked in-house to develop an online orientation, a possibility that LACC will explore. In-person orientation will resume during winter intersession. Under follow-up, the district is working on an online “alert” for students that would be available throughout the semester. Career Center-Based on the success of the visit to the prisons, they are planning to repeat it in the spring. Student Life-A voter registration drive will be held on 12/13 and again on 2/4/08. The primary is 2/5/08. Welcome Days will be 2/4-2/6 and will be a “decentralized” format that will reach out to the entrances to the campus to help students as they approach the college. The first Explore L.A. program will be on 2/9. [Congrats, Earic, for being awarded funding to support this innovative program that brings classroom curriculum into the community!] Drop-offs for the Toy Drive are located in the SAC, ASO and Counseling offices. EOPS-The office is busy with students getting in their third contacts. Day@City de-brief is scheduled—final count is 434 students. Comments have been very positive. [Belinda expressed appreciation to all who participated with special thanks to Kalynda and recognition to Alma and Annet, who go to the high schools and recruit the students.] An IT person has been hired to support EOPS, OSS and Matriculation. His name is Sol Limon.

Counseling is working with Matriculation to make the counseling appointment process more student friendly. Target: Winter 2008. Transfer Center-The district Academic Senate is coordinating a meeting of transfer center directors. Although the formal application period for CSUs has ended, many are still accepting apps. Refer students to the Transfer Center. An Advisory Council meeting will be scheduled during the spring semester. Articulation-The new Title V regulations, which prohibit Transfer or general liberal arts degrees, may negatively impact the number of students who get AA degrees before transferring. Artic and the Curriculum Committee are working collaboratively to investigate how to minimize this issue.

3.  Under VP’s Report, Myra addressed: Status of SLOs; the top 5 vote-getters for student services success initiatives and the next steps; winter recess plans [Admissions and the SAC will be open from 8:30a to 4:00p on 12/26 and 12/27.]

4.  Committee Reports were provided for SGC (a several year lease with 3020 Wilshire Blvd education building was approved; Dept Chairs (a new block scheduling pattern was approved which moves class starting time up to 7:25a and provides 2 class-free hours one Tuesday and one Thursday; and Prop A/AA (Will and Myra are continuing to work with the architects on the design of a NEW student services center with minimal changes to the size but allowing for improvements in the design…and adding ASO and the Foundation to a top floor location).
