About Shirley Carver Miller

Shirley C. Miller is a warrior for literacy. As a former first lady of Georgiaand wife of Georgia’s former senator and governor, Zell Miller, she became and remains one of adult literacy’s strongest advocates. She has traveled the road by car, rail and air; hosted statewide conferences;and rallied communities to ensure that Georgia stays focused on the eradication of illiteracy. The Technical College System of Georgia (TCSG) and the Certified Literate Community Program (CLCP) have partnered with the TCSG Foundation to create a scholarship program in Mrs. Miller’s honor and to reward our Georgia GED graduates with a monetary award that will allow them to continue their education.

Scholarship Program Overview:

The purpose of the Shirley Carver Miller Scholarship is to reward GED graduates by providing a financial incentive to work towards continuing their education at one of Georgia’s technical colleges in any field of study of their choosing.

Scholarships in the amount of$500to attend a TCSG college will be awarded.

Target Audience:

The target audience for the Shirley Carver Miller Scholarship is GED diploma recipientswho must be:

Nominated by a Certified Literate Community Program

A legal resident of the state of Georgia

Accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled at a TCSG technical college.

Restrictions for Use:

  • The scholarship award will be sent to the recipient’s Financial Aid Office for disbursement. The students will have access to a line of credit placed in their account.
  • Use of the scholarship is restricted to tuition, fees, books, materials and supplies, and housing. The scholarship award is intended to pick up where other awards leave off to cover expenses associated with the cost of attendance.

To Apply:

Students may apply by completing the Shirley Carver Miller Scholarship application form. The deadline for receipt of all materials is May 1, 2017.

In addition to the completed application form, applicants must submit:

  • Current Complete Official Transcript(s) of Grades (if already enrolled in college)or copy of GED scores (applicants who have never enrolled in college must submit a copy of his/her GED scores.). Transcripts MUST be submitted in a sealed envelope. The transcript may be included with the completed application or sent directly to the CLCP Officeor sent under separate cover directly from the college Registrar’s Office to the address listed below.
  • Two letters of recommendation, including one from a CLCP director or board member and one from an Adult Education Program Administrator, teacher or GED instructor. The recommendation letters should include: (1) the recommender’s relationship with the applicant, (2) how long they have known the applicant, and (3) why they are recommending the applicant for receipt of this scholarship award.

An application will be considered incomplete and not reviewed for consideration if the transcript or letters of recommendation are missing from the applicant’s final package.
