Convocation 2016
STUDENT MARSHALLING - TIDBITS
The marshaling field is located under the tent in front of the Athletics Centre
Marshalling for the 10am ceremony will begin at 9am. Volunteers are asked to be in the marshaling area at 8:45am. Marshalling for the 2pm ceremony will begin at 1pm, and volunteers are asked to be in the marshalling area by 12:45pm.
Name tags will be provided at the marshalling field. Please wear these to identify yourself to the students. Lunch is provided at the LEC Dinging Hall from 11 a.m.–1:30p.m.
Student Affairs will play music and provide a microphone for the Marshalls to make announcements.
Students should arrive to the marshalling field with a card given to them by the Registrar’s office before they received their gown. Make sure the students hold onto this card!! They need to hand it to the Reader on stage to have their name read out. If their name is difficult to pronounce ASK THEM TO WRITE THEIR NAME PHONETICALLY SO IT IS PRONOUNCED CORRECTLY AS THEY CROSS THE STAGE.
Group photos with Miranda Studios this year: Ecological Restoration,BESS degree,Nursing, Business, Forensics, NEW Bachelor of Arts & Science and Journalism.
The students should be lined up behind the appropriate sign (e.g. B.A.General, B.Sc. Honours etc.) in alphabetical order. Thelead marshals will provide more detailed instructions.
At approximately 20 minutes before the start of the ceremony, the Lead Marshals will direct the students to begin marching toward Bata. Marshals are asked to help the students stay in their proper alphabetical order and walk with them to the bridge. A marshal is generally placed to walk between the groups. The piper will meet the procession on the West side of the LEC Bridge and pipe the students as they proceed with the Lead Marshals to the podium to be seated.
There is a hand rail onto the stage. Announce to students that if they need a hand rail they should be the person on the right side.
Colin Campbell or Jamie York will be piping the students across the bridge.
Graduates will receive a water bottle as they come to the marshalling field. If they need more water on the podium, there will be water coolers inside the Bata Library doors. Volunteers will be welcome to a bottle, but I would appreciate it if everyone could wait until after convocation to ensure we have enough bottles for the graduates.
Things to remind students about: There is NO SHADE ON THE STAGE so PLEASE PUT ON SUNSCREEN! Please no purses. Tell the students that there are some granola bars and juice in the marshalling box if they haven’t eaten (we don’t want anyone passing out on stage). Please don’t get up during ceremony, it is disrespectful.
Thank you for helping!!
