Student Individual Manipulatives
Objective:
· Create a sample set of materials for use with a small group.
· Discuss how to use the materials to help students master the phonological and phonemic awareness skills.
1. Take one piece of tag board and cut into fourths. Create four strips of tag board and put in the colored dots as in model. (The dots represent phonemes).
3. Take four strips of tag board and put in colored squares as in model. The colored squares represent syllables.
4. Take four strips of tag board and leave empty. These strips represent words.
Activity #2
Paint Stirrers with Poker Chips
Objectives
· Create a manipulative to teach phonemic awareness to use with a small group.
· Discuss how to use the materials to help students master the phonological and phonemic awareness skills.
Directions:
1. Take 1 paint stirrers, 5 velcro pieces, and five color chips.
2. Make your paint stirrer with poker chips.
Discussion:
Discuss using the paint stirrers with the poker chips to teach phonemic awareness skills at your grade level.
Activity #3
Moose Game
Objectives
· Create a center or small group game to teach phonemic awareness.
· Discuss how to use the materials to help students master the phonological and phonemic awareness skills.
Directions:
1. Gather 15-20 Popsicle sticks.
2. Write with a marker letters, letter combination, high frequency words, etc. on one end. One Popsicle stick should have the word “moose” written on it.
3. Place your game in a small sandwich bag.
Directions for Use with Students:
Group of 5-6 students sit in a circle. All sticks go into a cup and each child chooses a stick and reads the letter or letter combination on the stick. Each child chooses a stick until a child chooses the stick with “moose.” They say “moose” and the game is over.
Discussion:
Discuss which of the phonemic awareness skills the game would address.
