OUTGOING STUDENT FEEDBACK FORM

University Attended Chinese University of Hong Kong

INDUCTION/ORIENTATION PROGRAMME

What did this involve, how long did it last, was it useful?

The orientation programme lasted for around a week and included activities such as going for dinner, going for a city tour, going for a hike etc. I would really recommend people to make use of it as it is a perfect opportunity to meet all the other exchange students + you get to know your way around a bit.

ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

Style of teaching, courses, ease of access to courses, methods of assessment, teaching support

The teaching style is not that much different from the UK one. Generally the classes are a bit smaller (30-70 students) and are not as interactive but apart from that it’s pretty much the same. I found it not too difficult to get the courses I wanted even though I took quite a few finance classes which are really popular with all the locals. Having said that, I would recommend anyone who is not a finance lover to not take them and opt for non-numerical subjects. This way you won’t have any problem getting the courses you want + it’s way easier to get good grades (or a pass) than it is when you take finance subjects. This is because profs generally grade students using a normal distribution curve and it is quite hard to compete with some Chinese geeks (and by some I mean 90% of them) who study 10 hours a day on average.

MBS INTERNATIONAL OFFICE

Level of support, additional information that could have been useful

Support was good.

MBS SECOND YEAR MEETINGS

Any additional information that you feel could have been provided

Generally, I think we were given too much rather than too little information. But there is one thing that should definitely be mentioned in the second year meetings. I can only recommend to every student going to HK to visit the MBS HK office and have a chat with the lovely ladies working there (Lilian, Venus and Christina). They are organizing alumni events basically every month where (if you attend) you will have the opportunity to meet many interesting people who are firstly very nice and secondly can get you an internship. Just tell Lilian, Venus or Christina that Theo or me told you about them and done ;).

HOST INTERNATIONAL OFFICE

Level of support, additional information that could be useful for future students

Was good.

INSURANCE, HEALTH COVER

Please include any information relating to the purchase of compulsory health insurance ie costs etc. or whether this was waived by having the University of Manchester Insurance Policy

I didn’t pay anything for insurance so I guess it was covered for by the University of Manchester Insurance Policy.

INFORMATION ON ANY ADDITIONAL COSTS

This should be information on any extra fees that the University charged but should not include accommodation, books, transport, visa etc.

No additional costs.

ACCOMMODATION

As much information as possible on what accommodation is recommended or not recommended.

I stayed in the International House (or I-House). All the halls of residence don’t really differ when it comes to room sizes, interior etc. But they differ very much when it comes to location. If you are very sporty or you want to lose some weight stay at either I-House or Shaw College. If not, don’t. Ah and before I forget, you will have to share a room with 1-2 students. Don’t worry too much though, it’s fun ;).

DESTINATION INFORMATION AND OVERALL EXPERIENCE

Transport, travel, social life, integration with local students, student activity groups

Transport is very cheap and efficient in Hong Kong. After having lived in HK you will complain about every other city when it comes to public transportation. CUHK is a bit outside of HK and it takes around 40 min to get to central where all the clubs and bars are. Integration with local students is not too difficult as they are all interested in getting to know Westerners. However, they lead different lifestyles so if you are into partying etc. it is much more likely that you will hang out with all the other exchange students rather than with the locals.

Activity groups: I took Kung Fu classes and it was lots of fun.

Last but not least, if you decide to go to HK you have to go hiking. It’s incredible!
