Introductions were made.
Steve shared local data with partners:
- 111 Open Cases
- 73 of those are in foster care placement
- 10 Willows
- 24 Orland
- 7 Elk creek
- 4 Chico
- Kids in Fresno, Salinas, Fort Jones - Most of foster care placements are in Orland
These are some of the questions that members asked:
- How many students stay in the system after AB12? Most choose to stay, half struggle.
- Can kids placed in guardianship participate at age 12 or older? Yes, at age 12 they get to participate in their own case plan. With guardianship, if they receive federal funding they get seen every 6 months but guardianship is a little different.
- Schools really haven’t understood CPS. Most educators make a phone call and expect something to happen and ask themselves “Why is this student still in their home?” If they feel a concern/frustration, feel free to call and ask. They should get a letter. It’s very vague due to confidentiality but there is a comment section where social workers are encouraged to elaborate a bit more so that the reporter feels ok of action taken.
- Is it hard to recruit foster parents? Yes, there are more requirements.
- Have you had opportunities to do foster care recruitment through the education system? Yes, in the past. Now the District has a social worker and foster youth liaisons but are open to partnerships/collaboration.
- If an underage girl comes in saying she is pregnant, is it reportable? Yes, it’s an automatic referral. An investigation is always done and they make work with law enforcement.
- Can principal, counselor, teacher be invited to TDM’s (Team Discussion Meetings)? Child Welfare usually lets Robin Smith or Angelica Perez know. Angelica mentioned that when they have a TDM, she contacts Christina then she communicates to the site liaisons.
