Student Expectations and Grading System

for Physical Education

  1. Course Description

PE Course 1 will provide a foundation for high school instruction. Students develop proficient movement skills in each area of physical education; they expand their capabilities for independent learning; and they examine practices that allow for sound decision making to enhance successful participation in movement activities. This course will concentrate on individual and dual activities such as: orienteering/outdoor adventure, cycling, tennis, badminton/speedminton, track & field, golf/frisbee golf, handball/racquetball, and a fitness lab. The areas of fitness, aquatics, and rhythm/dance will be included as well.

  2. Provide daily program of physical activities to promote good health and maintain fitness.
  3. Provide opportunities for skill development in various recreational activities that carry-over value for adult life.
  4. Provide situations stimulating spirit of competition among peers within boundaries of fair play and good sportsmanship.
  1. Dress and Participation
  2. Every student must be properly dressed for class:
  3. Tennis Shoes (MUST have laces – no boots, sandals, or slippers)
  4. Black Shorts (school or plain mesh/cotton – no logos)
  5. Black Sweatpants (no stripes or logos)
  6. Red Shirt (school or plain cotton – no logos)
  7. Daily participation is mandatory unless a doctor’s note is on file in the health office. No parent notes will be accepted.
  8. A student must have his/her school ID card to get PE loaners or locker information.
  9. If a student refuses to get a loaner from their instructor or do not have their school ID card they will be given a referral.

  1. Locks, Lockers, and Showers
  2. Lockers are available for books and clothes during his/her PE class.
  3. Boys – daily basis only (there are lockers available for usage during class)
  4. Girls – assigned lockers for the year
  5. No electronics or phones are allowed in class at any time. It is highly recommended not to bring any electronic devices to school.
  6. It is the responsibility of each student to properly secure his/her belongings in a locker provided. We are not responsible for any lost or stolen items. DO NOT share a locker.
  1. Conduct
  2. All students are expected to abide by the school board behavioral rules and class policies established for his/her activity by his/her instructor. Unacceptable behavior can affect his/her academic grade and may result in a “U” conduct grade.
  1. Homework
  2. Occasionally there may be a project due throughout the year.
  3. Late work (within one week of due date) will lose half the points possible, unless student has an excused absence (due date is the first day student returns to class; otherwise it may be considered late).
  4. Cuts and Tardies
  5. All students are expected to be in PE area before the passing bell. Any student arriving after the beginning of roll may be given a cut or tardy.
  6. All students must remain in designated area for their activity for duration of class. Failure to do so will result in a cut.
  1. Make-up Points
  2. Points lost from absences or non-suits can be made-up by running/walking 6 laps under the supervision of a PE instructor. These make-ups will be on Wednesdays at 6:45 a.m. or 3:00 p.m. (a schedule will be posted).
  3. There may be other opportunities throughout the school year (student should speak to her/his instructor).
  4. All missed work is the responsibility of the student to make it up in a reasonable amount of time.
  1. Grading (WILLinclude the following AREAS)
  2. Physical Fitness: mile, conditioning, push-ups, curl-ups, etc.
  3. Activity: observation, skills test, written test
  4. Dress: Improperly dressed and/or loaner clothes may result in a loss of 5 to 10 points daily.
  5. Participation and Conduct: Non-participation or poor effort may result in a loss of points. Refusal to participate may result in a referral.

A+ / 100-98 / B+ / 89-88 / C+ / 79-78 / D+ / 69-68 / F / 59 and below
A / 97-93 / B / 87-83 / C / 77-73 / D / 67-63
A- / 92-90 / B- / 82-80 / C- / 72-70 / D- / 62-60
